Benziger Family Winery

Benziger Family Winery It's been more than two decades since Mike and Mary Benziger first drove up Sonoma Mountain and saw the overgrown ranch that would become Benziger Family Winery. They purchased the land with the help of Mike's father, Bruno Benziger, a wine and spirits importer from New York. A year later, Bruno and his wife Helen, along with their two youngest children, moved west to help start the winery. Mike's younger brothers, Bob, Joe and Jerry Benziger, would soon follow. Today, more than two-dozen Benzigers live on and around the estate winery in Sonoma County. The first Benziger Family wines were produced to critical acclaim in 1981. In 1982, the family introduced the Glen Ellen brand and with it a new category of good wines at affordable prices, dubbed "the fighting varietal." In 1993, the Benzigers sold their popular Glen Ellen brand to pursue the family's common goal: To craft wines that authentically express the individual vineyards from which they are made, with integrity and an enduring respect for the land. "Benziger is a winery defined by family, passion and enthusiasm," says National Sales Manager Chris Benziger. "We're committed to winemaking that exceeds expectations on every level. We do this, not from a boardroom thousands of miles away, but here at the winery and out in the vineyards-connected to the land, to the wine and to the consumer." The Benzigers live and breathe Sonoma County winegrowing. The result is Sonoma wine with a strong sense of place that satisfies the palate and nourishes the soul. "There's an incredible moment when people get the idea of how grapes and wine are connected to a local area," says Mike Benziger. "It's really a wow experience. If we can be the ones who usher in that experience for them, then we're successful."

This version is full bodied, round, and intensely flavored, tasting of cherry, cedar, tobacco, toast, herbs, and blackberry. Enjoy this wine with rabbit stew, beef tortillas, roast venison, and barbecued lamb.

  Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma Mountain
The Estate vineyard at Benziger is certified Biodynamic by the Demeter Association - confirming the family's commitment to environmentally responsible farming practices. Free from synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, the vineyard authentically produces fruit representative of the unique soil and climate combinations of the Benziger's Sonoma Mountain vineyard. Yields at the Benziger Estate are naturally low due to the thin soils and steep terraces, with an average harvest of less than two tons per acre.
  Estate Zinfandel, Sonoma Mountain
This classic Sonoma Mountain Zin is a blockbuster. Extremely ripe and rich in aroma (blueberry, blackberry jam, toasted oak, black peppercorn), and powerful and long on the palate, with a very persistent finish. It is very intensely-flavored and full-bodied with velvety texture and good balance, combining richness and ripeness with the complexity of French oak aging. Serve with pasta with fresh tomato sauce, pizza with red and green peppers, hamburger, roast duck in Madeira and green peppercorn sauce, and breaded veal cutlet.
  Fumé Blanc, North Coast
It is fruity in style, with subtle oak and herb overtones. In aroma, it smells of apple, lemon grass, and vanilla; on the palate, it is full bodied, softly textured, and medium long on the finish. It is supple, rich, and very well balanced, combining accessibility with complexity; a full bodied wine tasting of ripe berries and plums, with overtones of toast and spicy oak. It has a long, smooth finish. Enjoy with vegetable lasagne, roast rabbit, venison terrine, meatloaf, steak, or lamb stew. Terry Nolan, Winemaker
  Pinot Noir, Sonoma County
It is round, full bodied, and fairly complex in flavor, with a medium to long finish. In aroma, it smells of plum, vanilla, toasted oak, ripe cherry, and clove. With its evident richness and fruitiness, it can be enjoyed with broiled fish such as halibut, flounder, or swordfish; crab or shrimp Louis (with thousand island dressing); pork tenderloin with cherry sauce; or broiled steak.
  Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County
This is the Cabernet equivalent of an iron fist in a velvet glove. It is rich, full bodied, and round, with layers of cedar, blackberry, and chocolate flavors. On the finish, it is long and toasty, with a tannic grip suggesting it will improve with another five to ten years of further aging. Enjoy this wine with broiled steak, beef empanadas, or lamb with black olives and green peppers.
  Reserve Chardonnay, Carneros
This Reserve is rich and complex in style. It is fleshy and full bodied, with unctuous texture and a long finish. In flavor, it is both intense and subtle, tasting of new oak, apple, baked pear, butterscotch, and crème caramel. Serve with scallops with mushrooms in cream sauce, crab quiche, cheese soufflé, chicken crepe with mushroom sauce, pheasant breast in aspic, chicken enchilada, and saltimbocca (sautéed veal scallop with prosciutto, Parmesan cheese, and sage).
  Reserve Merlot, Sonoma County

  Reserve Pinot Noir, Sonoma County
An excellent Pinot Noir, and one of the best of the vintage, in a full, complex style. It is intensely flavored, full bodied, and velvety in texture, and has a very long finish. In flavor, it tastes of toasted oak, caramel, plum, black cherry, and tobacco. Enjoy with pork tenderloin with cherry sauce, broiled steak, or beef empanadas.
  Sonoma Mountain Red
The concentrated and structured flavors are of blackberry, chocolate, mint, black pepper and vanilla. It is a powerful wine with an intense body and texture. The tannins are big, but soft. Drink now, but it will improve until 2012.
  Sonoma Valley Port, Sonoma County
Made from Dragonsleaf Vineyard Syrah and a splash of Shell Creek Vineyards Petite Sirah, this dark ruby red wine showcases the signature black fruit flavors, sturdy tannins and rich mouthfeel.
  Syrah, California
Complex aromas are of black fruit, smoky tar and dried herb. The mouthfeel is soft with flavors of black plum, vanilla and black pepper. The finish is long and noted by ripe fruit. Drink or cellar for up to 5 years.
  Tribute
Rich concentration, velvety tannins that engage from the very beginning. The finely-grained tannins are positioned throughout the entire wine. The finish is firm, balanced and long with flavors of berry, jam, olive and coffee
  Tribute
The wine is deeply colored and very rich; an unusually powerful Cabernet-based wine, which has intense fruit character (blackberry, plum, boysenberry) and layers of black olive, coffee, and toasty, spicy oak.
