Williams-Selyem Winery

Williams-Selyem Winery Williams Selyem Winery began as a simple dream between two friends, Ed Selyem and Burt Williams, who pursued weekend winemaking as a hobby in 1979 in a garage in Forestville, California, and made their first commercial vintage in 1981. In less than two decades, Burt & Ed created a cult status winery of international acclaim. Together they set a new standard for Pinot Noir winemaking in the United States, aligning Sonoma County's Russian River Valley in the firmament of the best winegrowing regions of the world. Today John and Kathe Dyson, who purchased the winery from Burt and Ed in 1998, carry on the passion for Pinot Noir winemaking without compromise. Burt and Ed were neighbors in the Russian River Valley, living across the river from one another, both holding down full time jobs but restless to delve further into the object of their mutual passion---wine. Burt was a 26-year veteran pressman for the San Francisco Newspaper Agency, publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner, and Ed worked as the accountant and wine buyer at Spear's market in Forestville in addition to making his own label called Hacienda del Rio. Burt had begun home winemaking on the weekends, and Ed had traveled the world without leaving Sonoma County by tasting and buying wines for the store. As friends, they decided to make a go of winemaking together in a two-car garage on River Road. The concrete pad outside held the small dairy tanks that they used as fermenters, and through grower and winemaker Leno Martinelli, they sourced fruit for their first wines from the 84-year old Zinfandel vines of Jackass Hill along with a small amount of Muscat grapes grown on the same property. Even though the winemaking equipment was very basic relative to some of the more modern wineries at the time, the combination of excellent fruit sourcing, hand harvesting in small forty-pound lug boxes, meticulous sorting at the winery and hand pressing of the grapes and skins proved to be a powerful formula in crafting intense wines of character and place. The resulting single vineyard designate Pinot Noir wines were truly distinctive in style and dramatic in their intensity. A small but growing cult following from a mailing list of friends of the winery bought everything they could make. They remained a well-kept secret until the 1987 California State Fair committee conferred upon the 1985 Rochioli Pinot Noir the title of sweepstakes winner and the winery won Winery of the Year concurrently. Williams Selyem was thus thrown into the national spotlight and officially launched into the arena of world-class wines.

  Bacigalupi Zinfandel
"The same depth of pure blackberry and raspberry jam fills your mouth with hints of roasted coffee and anise. Dark chocolate and clove are wrapped around concentrated blackberries & wild raspberry jam in the nose. Jam-packed and concentrated in the mouth, the finish is substantial, luxuriant and sensibly tannic."
  Central Coast Pinot Noir
"The ripe fruit from this vintage offers a perfumed nose of Bing cherries, wild strawberry, mushroom, Asian spice, mint and black tea. I find that the rich and round tannins help to carry the balanced acidity of the wine that follows through long into the finish. A wonderful year in the Central Coast."
  Feeney Zinfandel
"The aromas exhibit concentrated wild raspberry jam, black pepper, spice, toffee and briery fruit. Extremely concentrated flavors of raspberry, blackberry jam, chocolate and coffee overwhelm your palate. Great acidity and round chewy tannins help balance the particularly ripe fruit. Concentrated and complex, this wine will drink very well into the future."
  Mistral Vineyard Port
100% Mistral Vineyard from our Central Coast Estate Vineyards. This wine is a blend of traditional grape varietals predominantly used in making traditional Ports in Portugal. It is fortified with Germain-Robin Alambic "port-style" spirits. Touriga National: The most important grape varietal used to produce high quality traditional port in Portugal. Teroldego: This varietal bears a great resemblance to zinfandel with its deep color, brambly blackberriness, vivacious acidity and moderate tannin.
  Russian River Valley Chardonnay
The perfume of caramel apples, Asian pears, honeysuckle and tangerine zest resonates in the aromas of this blend. Rich and lush flavors of Gravenstein apples, pears, minerals, crème caramel, spice and roasted almonds linger on the palate. Pleasant acids accentuate the exotic fruit characters that become affluent and creamy in your mouth. The silky fruit concentration finishes with a mineral quality.
  Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
"This wine is always one of my favorite blends. The nose is scented of ripe cherries, wild blackberry jam, violets, spice, crème Brule and honey-cured bacon. Your mouth fills with maraschino cherries, raspberries, sassafras, pie spices and toasty oak. The ripe, concentrated tannins are rich and round across the palate. The bright acidity and berry finish is long and lingering. Will age as well as any of the Russian River blends."
  Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
"Rich and dark in color, the nose of this wine exhibits aromas of wild berries, pomegranates, sandalwood, cardamom and toasted vanilla beans. The mouth is filled with flavors of raspberries, truffles, dried cranberries, roasted nuts, Asian spices and mocha. The Coastal acidity and concentrated tannins accentuate the ripe, wild berry flavors and lingers into the long finish."
Vista Verde Vineyard Late Harvest Gewürztraminer
This would be our third vintage of dessert wine from this vineyard. Cold fermented for over 168 days in 100% brand new French oak barrels. Enchanting aromas of Sun Crest peaches, lichee, rose water and spices dictate the nose in your glass. Ripe flavors of peaches and nectarine pie are accentuated by the mouth-watering acidity. The finish goes on forever and would complement fruit desserts. Bob Cabral, Winemaker
