Eyrie Vineyards

The Eyrie Vineyards, founded by David and Diana Lett in 1966, was the first vinifera vineyard in Oregon's Willamette Valley since before Prohibition. David Lett has been making Pinot noir from a single vineyard longer than any other winemaker in the United States. David Lett's vision to cultivate Pinot noir in Oregon's Willamette Valley was initially disparaged by his former professors at The University of California at Davis. Too cold and too wet, they claimed. His success led to a rush to establish vineyards in Oregon in the late 1970's --- Eyrie Vineyards was already more than ten years old. Like most pioneers, David Lett has frequently sailed against prevailing winds during his thirty-three-year career. Contrary to conventional wisdom, he believes that color exists in an inverse ratio to true Pinot noir varietal flavors. Lett's vision is of a wine of bright garnet color and pure varietal flavors in harmony and balance with restrained alcohol and tannins. His "Burgundian" vision has flown in the face of the popularity of California Cab styled Pinots, but winelovers in the know, know that the complexity and sophistication of Eyrie's style of Pinot is much more interesting to drink than the black, "macho" Pinots.

Chardonnay Reserve
Our 2001 Chardonnay epitomizes the Eyrie style: barely a hint of oak, yet the wine is rich and full, with a lovely lingering finish. Will continue to develop complexity and character over the next five to ten years. Made from the first Chardonnay vines in the Willamette Valley.

Estate Reserve Pinot noir
At bottling, this wine was dominated by earthy, gamey, forest-floor aromas. Out of this rich substrate, the flowers are beginning to bloom and the fruit is emerging. It achieves a fine balance between power and elegance. Awarded 91 points in The Wine Enthusiast in 2003, it was recently described as “almost voluptuous, a rarity for this grape which is classically rather light in color and body; gorgeous, enticing.” Eyrie’s “single vineyard” Estate Reserve Pinot noir is made exclusively from the first plantings of Pinot noir in the Willamette Valley.

Estate Reserve Pinot noir
2000 was one of our all-time favorite years, a perfect growing season filled with even, temperate days that gave us some of our best Pinot Reserves ever! According to a well-known Burgundian winemaker, it is ”reminiscent of a fine Chambolle Musigny.” Eunice Fried calls it “a beautiful seductive wine, fine satin in texture, elegant, rich and sublime in taste.” Eyrie’s “single vineyard” Estate Reserve Pinot noir is made exclusively from the first plantings of Pinot noir in the Willamette Valley.

Muscat Ottonel
Eyrie’s “cult wine” (for less than $500 a bottle!) This little Muscat, one of the classic wine varieties of Alsace, is a “shy bearer”, so sensitive to weather conditions during bloom that some years we don’t get any grapes at all. Too bad, because people who love it LOVE it. A bone dry wine with delicate floral aromas, fun to match with a variety of foods. Try it as a fresh summer aperitif, too. Very limited.

Pinot Blanc
Made from a small planting of authentic Alsatian vines at our “Sisters” Vineyard in the Dundee Hills. Our new 2002 vintage is lean and clean, with flavors and scents characteristic of the finest Alsatian Pinot blanc. Eyrie Pinot blanc is gaining a terrific following!

Pinot gris Estate
Eyrie Pinot gris is an incredibly versatile "food wine". Bone dry, medium-bodied, with a nicely balanced acidity, our newly-released 2004 vintage shows complex varietal aromas and flavors, with a smooth yet crisp and refreshing finish.
