Stonestreet Winery
|
|
J. Stonestreet & Sons Vineyard & Winery began in the autumn of 1989 when Jess Jackson purchased a small vineyard and winery in the rolling hills bordering southern Alexander Valley. He named the winery in honor of his late father, Jess Stonestreet Jackson, and dedicated it to the task of handcrafting wines using traditional methods while showcasing modern techniques. Stonestreet quickly garnered international acclaim for powerful red and luscious white wines. Following this early success, Jess Jackson acquired the nearby Alexander Mountain Estate in 1995 and focused Stonestreet on mountain wines, particularly the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, in addition to small amounts of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from older vineyards on the mountain. A new Stonestreet winery was completed in time for the 2000 harvest and sited near Alexander Mountain Estate. The winery was designed to accommodate the many small tanks necessary to separate small lots of mountain fruit. Ample room was also made for easier barrel aging with gentle racking and stirring of lees. Today, after careful investment, precision farming and adapted winemaking techniques, Stonestreet wines are setting new, higher standards for Alexander Valley. Our family is dedicated to fulfilling the promise of Alexander Mountain Estate’s exceptional and distinctive vineyards. Highlighting our efforts, we present small select quantities of single-vineyard wines such as Christopher’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Upper Barn Chardonnay and Upper Barn Sauvignon Blanc, all from our Alexander Mountain Estate.

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
"The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon with layers of fleshy blackberry and current fruit flavor ring true varietal expression with a rich, dense, sophisticated palette to explore. The supple mid-palate glides focused tannins into a seductive finish accented by notes of cedar, herbal minerality and mocha. A classic estate wine that can drink well upon realease yet ages gracefully for 10-15 years." - Graham Weerts, Winemaker

Block Sixty-Six Chardonnay
Block Sixty-Six Chardonnay is Estate grown at 1,800’ in elevation on Alexander Mountain Estate. This wine reflects its mountain climate and volcanic origins with a mineral structure supporting opulent, bright fruit flavors, light on the palate, and a ribbon of caramel.
|
Christopher’s Cabernet Sauvignon
Christopher’s Cabernet Sauvignon illustrates the color and flavor intensity of Alexander Mountain Estate fruit. Vineyards for this Christopher’s Cabernet Sauvignon are 2,400 feet above sea level. Lean, rocky, and well-draining soil and cooler temperatures have lower yields and produce smaller grape clusters and berries. This smaller fruit contains deep, vivid color and rich, rewarding flavor.
Mountain vineyards with naturally small yields deliver intensely flavorful grapes. The resulting wine is deep, concentrated wine displaying rich varietal characteristics of dark berry and cassis with hints of spice and chocolate on the nose.
|
Legacy Red Wine
The wine was aged in small, thin-staved, French oak barrels from coopers in Bordeaux. Regular racking helped in the natural clarification of the wine. As the lots for this vintage were selected with an emphasis on the quality and suppleness of their tannin structure, the blend needed only a slight egg white fining before being bottled unfiltered.
This aromatic wine, rich in spicy flavors reminiscent of cedar, cassis and dark chocolate with hints of smoky toastiness, is packed with concentrated black fruit flavors, and is soft and supple on the palate.

Sonoma County Chardonnay
Pears, apples and subtle hazelnut on the nose with high fruit intensity and a slight mineral component on the palate exemplify Stonestreet’s Sonoma County Chardonnay.
Sonoma Valley, Carneros, Russian River and Alexander Mountain Estate provided wonderful Chardonnay fruit. Grapes from five outstanding vineyards were delivered as individual lots to the winery. After pressing, the juice was allowed to settle overnight and then racked into small oak barrels. Combining native and inoculated fermentation methods encouraged fruit-driven, nutty aromas and flavors with a supple texture and lasting finish. Fermentation in 100% French oak imparted spicy, toasty vanilla notes to the wine. A malolactic fermentation and aging sur lies, with monthly stirring, added to the rich feel and complex finish of the wine.
A big Chardonnay, somewhat Burgundian in style, this wine has flavors of tropical fruit, pear and apple wrapped in toasted French oak.

Stonestreet Sonoma Chardonnay
"Hand-picked fruit from select Alexander Mountain vineyard blocks are blended to produce a classic 100% estate Chardonnay. This three ridge cuvee rings true with aromatic tropical accents, layered with peach and pineapple ending with a slight lemon-lime mineral component. The body is medium in weight yet elegant and offers an exceptionally long finish." - Graham Weerts, Winemaker

Upper Barn Chardonnay
The Upper Barn Chardonnay is Estate grown at 1,400 - 1,800’ in elevation on Alexander Mountain Estate on old See’s / Old clone vines that provide balance and a gentle mineral structure. The resulting wine exhibits spicy apple and pear flavors typical of this site.
|
Upper Barn Sauvignon Blanc
The Upper Barn vineyard rises to 1,800’ above sea level. With its dramatic views, shallow gravelly soils and cool climate, this seven-acre Estate vineyard consistently produces low yields of intense, mineral-laden Sauvignon Blanc.
After pressing, the juice was barrel fermented to add spicy oak characteristics and a lush palate. This wine did not receive malolactic fermentation or stirring of lees.
Crisp fruit flavors of ripe melon, fig, lemon and grapefruit on a clay-mineral backbone make this a refreshing companion to food.
The Upper Barn name comes from its historical use as the place where horses were changed when crossing over Alexander Mountain Estate and the Mayacamas Mountains.
