Thomas Fogarty Winery

Thomas Fogarty Winery What began as a pastime is today the Thomas Fogarty Winery and Vineyard, one of the San Francisco Peninsula's most respected wineries. A Stanford Cardiovascular Surgeon and world-renowned inventor, Thomas Fogarty took up home winemaking in the early 1970's in a small cabin on the current winery site. He planted his first grapes in 1978, and in 1981 established a commercial winery in the historic grape growing region of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Twenty five acres of Burgundian-style varietals are planted on the 325 acre estate, focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and small lots of Merlot and Sangiovese. The winery property, located directly west of Palo Alto and Stanford University, sits on Skyline Blvd. at a 2000 foot elevation. The long, cool growing season and excellent sun exposure provide an ideal climate for these grape varieties. Dr. Fogarty's vision is to produce high quality, character-filled wines which take full advantage of the unique soil and climate of this appellation. The mountain top setting has sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Accommodating up to 220 guests, Thomas Fogarty Winery is an intimate, elegant, and relaxing setting for memorable events. Surrounded by vineyards and a beautifully landscaped lawn, the handsome redwood reception facility flows down the mountainside on three separate levels, each exposed to stunning views. The 4,000 square foot Pavilion overlooks the pampered Chardonnay vineyard. The unique copper roof and open air feel makes the structure a Bay Area "one of a kind." The Hill House and it's adjoining terrace, hand crafted with Redwood panels, tile, and hardwood floors is an area used all year around. The terrace has glass panels lined on runners, allowing it to be closed off on cooler days without sacrificing the famous view. The Fogarty Board Room, a popular getaway for Silicon Valley companies, is a welcome retreat from the daily office grind. This room comfortably accommodates up to 20 guests and is equipped with most AV needs. The river rock fireplace is a welcome sight on a cool winter's day and a custom made pool table could be considered "Team Building."

  Camel Hill Cabernet Franc
Located on Bear Creek Road, south of the town of Los Gatos the Camel Hill Vineyard is perfectly positioned at a 1500 foot elevation high above Lexington Reservoir. Only in vineyards of superlative quality does "Franc" achieve the necessary ripeness and complexity to be worthy of a stand alone bottling. The Camel Hill Vineyard’s mountainous soils produces truly awesome "Franc", noteworthy for its seductive aromas and flavors of violets, black spice and plums. The "Camel Hill" component of the name stems from vineyard owner John Anderson’s interest in exotic animals.
  Estate Reserve Chardonnay
With twelve acres of cool climate chardonnay planted on the Fogarty estate vineyard, excellence abounds. Creating a wine of reserve designation takes an even greater respect for the factors of the vintage and deftly diligent winemaking. The interplay of these two forces meet triumphantly in the 2002 Estate Reserve Chardonnay. Staw in color, with a touch of honey and alfalfa on the nose, the wine appoaches with a texture that is immediately rich and subtle. With an essence of peaches and cream, this mineral-ladden-multi-layered wine shows through in the glass. Descriptors indeed, elude the true enjoyment of this delicious wine.
  Fiddletown Barbera
Born of red, iron rich mountain soils, warm sun drenched days and cool breezy nights we can’t think of a better area to grow our Barbera grapes than Richard Martella’s 20+ year old Fiddletown vineyard. Barbera is a notoriously high acid grape, the warm sierra foothills have proven to be a stellar area for this northern Italian varietal. The grapes were picked in early October, crushed to small open top bins and fermented for 10 days on their skins, at which point they were pressed to barrel. We use our old Pinot Noir barrels, all Tonnellerie Francois Frere French oak, to age the Barbera. It rested on its lees for three months and racked two times prior to being bottled unfiltered. Our Barbera is always luscious and forward, often exhibiting flavors of plum and black cherry. The 2003 version also has hints of cranberry, smoke and clove on the perfumed nose. The palate is defined by more ripe fruit flavors and smoke. The finish has the hint of vanilla and brown spice. It is a powerful wine, yet still balanced. The varietal’s characteristic acidity is present and freshens the palate and lengthens the finish. I see no reason not to drink this wine today, yet it will certainly hold in the bottle for another 5-7 years. Tomato sauces, Barbeque and other powerfully flavored dishes would set this wine off perfectly.
  Late Harvest Gewurztraminer
Another first for the winery! From the Scheid Vineyard in Monterey. Hanging on the vine late into November of 2003, these shriveled grapes came in with maximum flavors and concentration of sugars bursting at 32 brix! The resulting wine leveled off at 9.5% residual sugar and deftly balances lovely honey, spice and citrus rind aromatics with a luscious, fruity mouthfeel. Another winery exclusive well worth your trip up the hill.
  Lexington Meritage
Comprised of 58% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc this wine has us truly excited about the future of Bordeaux varietals in the cool but sunny reaches of the Santa Cruz Mountains. We sourced the majority of the grapes from Jon Anderson’s Camel Hill Vineyard, high above the Lexington Reservoir. The balance comes from our own Razorback Vineyard on our mountain estate. Blackberry, cassis and currant flavors are present in the nose, more subtle aromas of tobacco, cedar and black spices are apparent. The mouth is full and rich with firm tannins and lively acidity. We recommend a vigorous aeration if drinking today, the wine should age gracefully for another 3-6 years and hold for an additional 4 years.
  Lodi Riverstone Merlot
Greg Lewis’ Riverstone Vineyard, on the Mokelumne River, sits in a unique microclimate. Nestled between the Sierra Foothills and the river, the Riverstone Vineyard has a much longer growing season than much of the Lodi Appellation, giving us fruit with intense fruit, good acid and soft tannins. In addition to great Merlot, Greg also grows some amazing Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. The 03 Riverstone contains 16% of the former and 5% of the latter; we blend these other varieties to add complexity and structure to the finished wine. Always an eminently drinkable wine, our 2003 Riverstone Merlot is unusually soft in the mouth for a wine so rich. The rich mouth-feel and soft tannins are accentuated by bright cherry, chocolate and mint flavors. It will be at its best over the next three to five years.
  Martella Hammer Syrah
Hammer Syrah is this winemaker’s rendering of a California style Syrah. Old world notions of terroir and adherence to traditional blends are set aside. We produced this luxurious wine by combining and balancing diverse aromas, flavors and textures. Hammer Syrah has lots of rich ripe fruit flavors with a soft round structure. The wine is complex and ready to enjoy today!

  Monterey Chardonnay
  Monterey Gewurztraminer
Exoticism is in. This new gewürztraminer proves the point in bold, flashy flavors, tangy, tongue-loving spiciness and over and above it all, those tell-tale aromatics of lychee nut and rose hip; a feast of fruit for the nose. The wine acolytes have spoken, and the chorus of angles sing its praise; rejoice in this fun, fruity wine! A perfect accompaniment to the fresh flavors of spring, enjoy the pristine, clean fruit flavors as an aperitif wine or with light brunch fare.
  Monterey Gewurztraminer
Our Gewurztraminer has become one of the signature wines at Thomas Fogarty. It is always delightfully dry on the palette, but full of tropical fruit, white flowers and spice, the hallmark of this beautifully crafted wine. The 2004 vintange produced some of our most striking gewurz ever with incredibly intense fruit flavors balanced by well integrated acidity. A perfect accompaniment to most fresh and exotic flavors. Enjoy the pristine, clean fruit flavors as an apertif wine or with light brunch fare.
  Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The almost blue/black saturation of this wine’s dark robe will tip the contented senses to the massive extraction coaxed from these prime Napa grapes. Then, with even the slightest aeration, a spice chest of heady plum, ripe blackberry and dark roasts brims from the glass. Tightly wound flavors echoing the same broody, deep aromas persist, mingled with dense black current as the wine bursts open on the palate. It feels almost naughty by nature to crack open this immaculate beauty in all of its youthful splender, but then, here at the Thomas Fogarty Winery, our Napa Cabernet has always been pure indulgence.
  Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Up the road from the Thomas Fogarty Winery (about 130 miles northeast where the low grades of Yountville butts up against the eastern base of Mount Veeder) lies a vineyard from which Thomas Fogarty has been sourcing some of the state’s best cabernet fruit for the past 15 years. We proudly persist in crafting an excellent cabernet sauvignon from the mature (roughly 30 years old) and distinguished Valerga Vineyard in Napa Valley. The impeccable quality of the fruit has consistently laid the supple foundation for an outstanding wine, with small amounts of merlot and cabernet franc making their way into the final blend to provide a polished and plush claret of classic proportions and balance.
  Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
We have been lucky to be able to purchase fruit from the Vallerga family for nearly fifteen years now. Strong grower-winery relationships are integral in producing superlative wines. The vineyard is located at the base of Mt. Veeder in the Yountville AVA, stretching from the alluvial benchlands up to the foothills. The sparse soils are gravelly in nature and provide for wines that are full of dark fruits and intense minerality. Our 2002 Cabernet from the Vallerga Vineyard is one of the more concentrated and intense wines we have produced from the vineyard. Explosive flavors of cassis, vanilla, sage and black currant are balanced with vivid acidity and firm tannins. This is a wine that will certainly benefit from time in the cellar. For current consumption we recommend decanting or a thorough aeration in the glass for maximum enjoyment.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine is incredibly rich in seductive black currant, sweet cassis and barrel spice, with the perfect balance of ripeness and intensity. The color is inky, while the texture shows both the underlying structure and the immediate enjoyable suppleness of it’s rich, briary fruit. This bottle of wine is certainly not to be missed. This wine should age beautifully for the next 10 years.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
2000 Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon Simply put, the quality of the 2000 vintage has brought the Thomas Fogarty Cabernet to new heights. The wine gives off seductive dark berries and barrel spice. The color is inky, while the texture shows both the underlying structure and the immediate enjoyable suppleness of it's rich, briary fruit. This bottle of wine is certainly not to be missed.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay
The wine has a green/straw colored hue and loads of minerals, fresh apples and cream on the nose. The palette offers the tell-tale SCM minerality and stoniness as well as apple and pear flavors. Some cream and toast flavors accompany the luxuriously textured finish. As we have bottle aged the wine for the better part of a year prior to release, it drinks well now but possesses the acid and stuffing for another 2-5 years of bottle age. This wine would pair fabulously with pastas with cream based sauces, seared scallops and fresh lobster.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay
"Sweet as a wind-lutes" airy strains your gentle muse has learned to sing and California’s boundless plains prolong the soft notes echoing.” So wrote Jack London of this beloved land, and yet a similar verse would seem to describe the beauty of our 2002 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay. Full of substance and generous citrus and pear flavors, the wine is utterly delicious. It will show its layers and goregous texture echoing throughout. A true song, not of the plains, but of the prestine mountains.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Merlot
The Merlot opens with soaring aromatics of mocha and cherries and follows with hints of toast and fresh mint. The wine is finely structured with well integrated tannins, balanced by bright acidity and a lush mouth feel. We are extremely pleased with this effort as it is truly representative of the 2001 vintage. Lush and powerful fruit, firml structure with bright acidity, is something we strive for in every wine we produce from the Santa Cruz Mountains. This Merlot drinks brilliantly now but possesses the backbone and stuffing for further development.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Merlot
The aromatics on this wine lead the way with toasty raspberry strudel and bits of cinnamon and cracked pepper in promise of the spice to follow. The fruit is long with cocoa coated tannins and deep, brambly, dark fruits to the finish. We picture the verdant hills and the mineral laden soils of the Santa Cruz Mountains as an enormous accordian, from whose crevices a thirsty giant might squeeze each and every drop of the wine so delicious as this.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir has the most difficult job of any wine varietal in maintaining a ying-yang balance between subtlety and finesse. One aspires not to overwhelm, but rather, to seduce. The 2001 Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot enraptures our strongest sense, the nose, with a rich invitation to savory red fruits. The first sip confirms this premise by offering a warm mouthful of almost sweet, strawberry-rhubarb compote. Set off against the structure and spice of this classic mountain fruit’s acidity and tannin, the wine closes with a real sense of place, here at home in the mountains.

  Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
A happy confluence of vineyard maturity and a reasonably warm year has resulted in most of our Pinot from the 2002 vintage to be bigger and, coorespondingly, fatter and happier than any previously made here at the Thomas Fogarty Winery. And when we say fat, we mean a wine of tongue-tickling texture, redolent of red fruits, strawberry and spice and echoing the autumnal season that surrounds us. Still, the skilled hands of Mr. Martella have shaped this wine into something close to perfect in terms of its’ immediate accessibility and obvious powers of seduction. You’ll love it!.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
Our first release of Estate Pinot Noir is sure to be a smashing success. We have carefully selected barrels from our two Estate Vineyards (the extremely cool and wind-swept Sky vineyard at 2000 ft. elevation, and our infamous Rapley Trail vineyard) to produce this beautifully balanced and perfumed Pinot Noir. Yields in 2003 were quite low, under 2 tons/acre, providing perfect material for concentrated yet elegant cool-climate Pinot Noir. This wine begins with a beguiling nose of red cherries, forest floor and wood smoke. In the mouth the texture steals the show, silky yet rich and mouth-filling. A long finish is accentuated by the mouth watering acidity and soft, plush tannins. This wine will be ideal for consumption over the next four years.
  Skyline Select
This brilliant Bordeaux- style blend finds its origins from the majestic home site of the Thomas Fogarty Winery, perched on the eastern slopes of the serpentine Skyline Boulevard. Here the rolling hills, deep canyons, and immense redwoods reflect the qualities with which we seek to endow our wines: layered complexity, depth of structure and a subtle power. With a deep robe of garnet and broody nose of rich, barrel char, you will be delighted to discover this wine of supple texture and panache. Accordingly, a perfumed and spicy nose introduce the bold flavors of cherry, chocolate, raspberry and plum. A satisfying wine created from the confluence of climate, sunshine, earth and brilliant Santa Cruz Mountains sky!
