Sherwood House Vineyards

Long Island's North Fork has ideal terroir, according to celebrated international wine broker Bill Sokolin: "This area has the potential for being the best of the best." Frank J. Prial of The New York Times has sensed it, too. In the summer of 2000 he wrote, "World class wines may be a few years away. It's just a matter of time."
Situated on a rural road in Mattituck, New York, Sherwood House Vineyards is graced with conditions that are ideal for viticulture. Sherwood House's owner Dr. Charles Sherwood Smithen explains: "The climate is reminiscent of the Bordeaux region. We are on a peninsula with moderating winds from Long Island Sound and mild winters. We have sandy, loamy soil and a superb growing season with 300 sunny days a year."

Chardonnay
Sherwood House Vineyards 1999 Chardonnay is an estate-grown top quality wine, crafted in the Burgundian style from only the gentle first press, which produces juice with the highest aroma and intensity. The exceptionally dry, hot 1999 growing season was the best that Long Island's North Fork vineyards had experienced in nearly two decades. However, just as many growers were readying to reap its benefits, heavy rains, and Hurricane Floyd arrived. Much of this precious crop of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes was lost. The few North Fork vineyards that survived this natural disaster, like Sherwood House Vineyards, were blessed with grapes that had gained a remarkable finishing touch of maturity from the storms. You'll share the magic of the vineyards and this remarkable vintage year when you sip this elegant, well-balanced wine.
