South River Vineyard
|
|
A deep canyon runs through the gently rolling hills that cascade toward Lake Erie's shores. Through the canyon walls flows the wild and scenic Grand River, and perched along her high cliffs sits a patchwork quilt of vineyards. The scenic roads that twist across covered bridges and turn out of the canyon rise towards a high plateau on South River Road, where a historic chapel nestles amongst rolling vineyards and panoramic sunsets. It is the Winery at South River Vineyard. Towering over the distant horizon of vivid blue lake water and the rolling bluffs of the Grand River canyon, the Winery draws from 25 acres of surrounding wine grapes. Only a select portion of the best juice is drawn from the vineyard for the Estate's wines. The remaining juice is trucked off to other wineries in the Valley. from time to time, life pauses in the Valley, as couples exchange wedding vows in the historic tasting room. Hours: Friday 4-11 p.m. Saturday 1-11 p.m. Sunday 1-7 p.m.

Cabernet Franc
2001 Harvest Cabernet Franc is one of the classic Bordeaux varietals and a early-ripening cousin of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are planted to two clones and trained to a vertical hedge. In 2002, an unusually hot, dry summer produced exceptionally ripe grapes. This dry red wine aged with toasted French oak displays intense flavors of light cherry and a hint of black pepper.

Chardonnay
2000 Harvest Chardonnay is grown at South River in tall, manicured hedges, with the fruit hand-thinned and fully-exposed to the sun. We press the grapes in stages, pausing to allow the skins to add flavor to the juice. The wine comes from hand-picked, cluster select grapes pressed cold as whole clusters. Aged in American oak barrels, it is dry with notes of butter & vanilla.

Concord Ice Wine
On the night of December 6th, temperatures plunged to 11 degrees. At 2:00 a.m., we began hand-harvesting frozen concord grapes, and by dawn we had pressed out 65 gallons of Concord juice from the rock hard berries. The Harvest Brix were 35.4 degrees and the wine is finished to 13.2 Brix. The wine is a concentrated nectar, very sweet, with intense grape and floral aromatics.

Merlot
Our first vintage of Merlot was produced in an extremely hot, dry year from 3-year old vines. These dry-farmed vines were not irrigated and the fruit was thinned to just the best, largest clusters on each vine. The wine is dark, soft on the tongue, with notes of jam, mint, and blackberry.
|
Pinot Grigio
2000 Harvest Pinot Grigio is a copper colored grape that yields a white wine. The grapes are left to hang on the vine until the skins soften and begin to burst, and then the fresh juice is pressed directly to oak barrels for fermentation and aging. The toasted staves of oak produce a rich, buttery wine with flavors of honey, pineapple, & vanilla with a hint of sweetness. Enjoy this wine with everything!

Riesling Vineyard Reserve 2001 Harvest
Our sweet Riesling is fermented from the free-run juice from our oldest vineyard, now 8 years old. As the fruit forms, leaves are stripped away to keep the fruit open to the sun. All of the fruit from the old vines is pressed very lightly, to draw off the sweetest, most aromatic portion of the juice. Only this select press fraction goes into our Vineyard Reserve. A full, silky mouth feel is alive with peach, apricot, and floral tones.

Riesling Vintner's Reserve
The 2002 season was hot and dry, producing grapes with very low acids and high sugars. After tasting thousands of gallons of Riesling, our Winemaker reserved one 238-gallon tank for a dry fermentation. This Vintner's reserve displays intense flavors of orange, citrus, honey, and pineapple.

Temptation
2002 We ferment Temptation from 100% Cabernet Franc juice bled from the freshly-crushed vats of red grapes. The semi-sweet wine shows a light cherry color from 6-10 hours of skin contact, while aromas of strawberry, spearmint, lilac, and rose dominate the glass. Give in to Temptation on the beach, by the fireplace, at sunset....

Trinity
1999 Harvest Meritage blend of equal parts Pinot Noir, Chambourcin, & Cabernet Franc. Nearly dry, barrel-aged two years. Smoky oak, black cherry, and dark plum overlay soft, smooth tannins. Very approachable, soft wine.
