Springhill Cellars

Springhill Cellars Springhill Cellars is a small family-owned winery producing premium Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and small lots of Chardonnay and (as the mood strikes) dessert wine in the heart of Oregon's beautiful Willamette Valley. Founded in 1988, the winery is owned by Mike and Karen McLain and Karen's father Merv Anthony and draws for its fruit primarily from the estate vineyard founded by the McLains in 1978. Some fruit from selected vineyards is purchased to add complexity and nuance to the wine. Mike is the winemaker. The vineyards and winery look west to the McDonald Forest, the beginnings of the Coast Range, north of Corvallis, Oregon. A silhouette of the hills is shown in the gold foil on our label. Both vineyard and winery are located on the west slope of Springhill, a small hill on the banks of the Willamette River west of Albany in Benton County about six miles north of Corvallis. The vines grow at an elevation of 420-300' on a west slope. The soil type is Veneta Variant, which is a sedimentary soil very much like Willakenzie, a more common soil in the northern Willamette Valley. It is a yellowish silty clay loam 3' deep over siltstone and sandstone. The vineyard is not irrigated. The Pinot noir (Pommard clone) vines were planted in 1990 on their "own roots" not grafted to phylloxera resistant rootstock. The vine spacing is 9' x 3' (it's a long story) which is 1,613 vines per acre. Pinot crop is dropped to one cluster per shoot, which produces just under 2 tons per acre in an average year. The guiding winemaking philosophy is that great wines are grown, not made. Therefore, our greatest efforts go into producing fruit of the highest quality and concentration and then interfering as little as possible in the process of coaxing it into the bottle. Our grape yields are kept low with the Pinot usually below 2 tons per acre and the Gris and Riesling at 3 tons per acre. The Pinot is neither fined nor filtered. Racking and pumping is kept to a minimum. The Gris is made in a rich fruity style with some oak contact. The Pinot is aged a year in a variety of oak barrels with a goal of concentrating fruit balanced with rich oak tannins. We produce 1,000-2,000 cases of wine each year, weather permitting.

Products

2000 Reserve, Estate Bottled Pinot Noir
Soft and lush with cherry and smoke in the nose with flavors of raspberry, black cherry and hints of bacon. The wine is nicely balanced with a full mid-palate and lingering finish.
2001 Saignee' Dry Rose' of Pinot Noir
General: Saignee' First, the accent grave should be above the first e, but I don't know how to make my computer do that. The term is common in France for juice drawn from the Pinot noir fermentation tanks prior to fermentation, the goal of which is to increase the skin to juice ratio of the remaining wine producing a more concentrated Pinot noir. This wine is made from that juice. We ferment it in used oak barrels until dry and until it completes malolactic fermentation. It is dry but fruity, with cherry candy aromas and flavors, well balanced with soft tannins and mouth cleansing acidity. It's a great summer sipping wine, or great with grilled (or baked) fowl.
  Estate Pinot Gris
It is a well balanced, fruity wine with aromas of pear and apple. It is crisp yet full bodied with viscous mid palate, pear, apple and melon flavors with a lingering finish. It is a bone-dry yet fruity style.
  Estate Pinot Gris
It is a well balanced, fruity wine with hints of the oak in the nose and on the palate. It is crisp with a little tannin yet full bodied with pear, apple and a little citrus with a lingering finish.
  Reserve Pinot noir
Full bodied and lush with flavors of current, black cherry and and blackberries with a hint of oak. The wine is nicely balanced with a full mid-palate and lingering finish.
