Auxerrois 2000 (oak-zer-wha)
If you are a parent, at some point in their development (it usually comes between the ages of 14-18) you’ll have some problems with your children Well, this same unfortunate dilemma has confronted the Alsatian winegrowers: they discuss Auxerrois as an errant step-child of Pinot Gris and either ignore it all together or try to get the grape some serious counseling. However, we at Harpersfield Vineyard embrace Auxerrois as the return of the Prodigal Son: lean, minerally and full of fruit.
Cabernet Franc 2001
Rich, dark and deeply concentrated with a nose of brambly fruit and spice. The finish is full, lasting and complex. Although it may not be “p.c.” this wine is crying out for a rare steak covered with sautéed mushrooms and onions.
Chardonnay “Cuvee sans Chene”
Taste the full fruit of the Chardonnay grape without the oak. A refreshing step back from traditional Chardonnays.
Chardonnay “du Printemps” 2003
Again, the cold, wet summer and fall of 2003 attenuated any hopes of making our standard barrel-fermented, Burgundian-style Chardonnay. I decided rather than attempting such a misguided effort, I would play the hand that nature dealt. The result is a clean, crisp, exciting “spring” Chardonnay that is very reminiscent of a young Chablis.
Chardonnay “Fut de Chene” 2001
A harmonious blend of fruit from our three Chardonnay vineyards fermented in new American oak and aged two years sur-lie prior to bottling. The wine demonstrates the incredible results of long-time aging on the lees: a nose rich with butterscotch and toasty vanilla bean complimenting a taste of toasty oak and citrus. If oaky Chards wind your watch, then come along!
Chardonnay “St. Vincent” 2000
This is a wine fit for the Great Gatsby! Elegant and refined, well heeled and insouciant with its nose most definitely in the air. Drink this wine with smoked salmon and caviar and you’ll understand why the wealthy work as hard as they do to stay rich!
Charmbourcin
Intense aromas of dark cherry, plum and spice dominate this rich full-flavored wine. Albeit, structured like some Italian Dolcettos this meaty, assertive red shouts for all to hear: “I’m a real red, that’s really from Harpersfield Vineyard.”
Cuvee d’Alsace
A harmonious blend of Auxerrois, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer — A taste of Alsace, France right in the glass.
Gewurztraminer
The classic wine of Alsace, Ohio's Northern is great! Perfume in a glass!
Pinot Gris “St. Fiacre” 2001 Vendange Tardive
The hallmarks of Pinot Gris are ripe white cherries, peaches and nectarines. Multiply those aromas by a factor of approximately 20 and here’s the wine. The formula sort of looks like this: (ripe white cherries, peaches and nectarines)20 x Botrytis + long cold fermentation = Harpersfield Vineyard Pinot Gris Vendange Tardive 2001. All this for $25.00 bottle and the Algebra lecture for free!
Pinot Gris “St. Fiacre” 2002
One of the most exciting aspects of making wine in the Grand River Valley is working with differences in vintages. 2002 was a much better year than 2001 and this Pinot Gris 2002 is unquestionably heads and shoulders above the 2001: it is rich, concentrated and focused. This is a great wine from a great year! Giddy up!
Pinot Gris “St. Fiacre” 2002 Vendange Tardive
An outstanding example of patience and temerity, the 2002 Pinot Gris was allowed to hang on the vines until the grapes reached an astonishing 32 Brix. Deep golden in color with a multitude of flavors, this wine is sure to please those with a sweet tooth.
Pinot Noir “Clos Mes Amis” Reserve Cuvee 2001
A medium to dark ruby-garnet robe cloaks a nose redolent of dark cherry, Kenyan coffee and subtle cranberry overlain with chocolate and toasty oak. The taste is full and long lasting with plum and sweet tannins in thefinish.
Riesling
Pale green-golden in color with panolpy of flavors and aromas: Key lime wrapped around grapefruit wrapped around white peach wrapped around strawberry, ALL wrapped around a pungent zippiness and lasting off-dry finish. Be our guest and wrap yourself around this exceptional Riesling.
Vin gris de Chambourcin 2003
Estate grown, 20-year old Chambourcin vines yielded excellent fruit despite the unusually cold and wet summer and fall. Cold pressing of whole clusters along with cold fermentation (55F for 3 weeks) and the use of Prise de Mousse yeast emphasizes the bright fruit that is part and parcel of cool climate Chambourcin.
