Cabernet Franc/Blaufränkisch

Cabernet Franc/Blaufränkisch Wine Details
Price: $17.99 per bottle

Description: Assuming the role of the mad “Dr. Franc-enstein”, our winemaker presents his own unusual creation born from the familiar Cabernet Franc and a lesser known wild card, Blaufränkisch. One of Austria’s main red grapes, Blaufränkisch thrives here in the rich New Jersey hills, making it the ideal red grape for our soil. In our lab, we stitched together its awesome dark fruit and black pepper aromas with the quiet elegance of Cabernet Franc for a truly spine-tingling discovery in wine.

Varietal Definition
Cabernet Franc:
Cabernet Franc is an accessible, spicy, herbal, dark blue grape variety that is often compared to Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Sometimes the French refer to Cabernets, which could mean either of the two grapes. Its typical aromas include an herbaceous and pronounced peppery nose, even in ripe fruit, and something eerily like tobacco. The Cabernet Franc ripens at an earlier stage, which gives it reason to exist in the Bordeaux area. In the Loire, where we find it a lot, it gives a clear red fresh and fruity wine.
Blaufrankisch:
Name for a Gamay type clone grape that is grown in Austria and used to produce dry, fruity red wines. The grape is also grown in Germany under the name Limberger. Also known as the Kekfrankos grape in Hungary and currently the main ingredient partly replacing Kadarka in the red wine blend once famous as "Egri Bikaver".
Lemberger:
Also known as the Blauer Limberger or Limberger. The latter name is used for the grape where found in Washington state in the U.S., which has sizable plantings of this variety at last report.
