he 2008 vintage was pretty cool and wet, especially for our Estate Vineyard. While this didn't bode well for our Syrah, the Petite Sirah is, once again, a superstar. Every year, I'm amazed by what a delicate wine we get from these grapes. Less jammy and intense than a lot of the burly California Petites, it is more floral with delicate spice, myrrh and softer tannins. These inherent site characteristics are enhanced by our decision to pick these grapes earlier, avoiding excessive concentration and the monochromatic fruit profile of some later-pick Petites.

Varietal Definition
Petite Sirah:
Petite Sirah is the same as the French variety known as Durif, a cross of Peloursin, with the true Syrah. A French nurseryman, Dr. François Durif, propagated the grape trying for resistance to powdery mildew and named it after himself, in the 1870s. Petite Sirah has long been an important blending grape, prized primarily for its deep color and fairly intense tannin. It is the variety most often chosen to blend into Zinfandel for added color, complexity, body, and to tone down the tendency of Zins toward "jammy" fruit.
