Description:
Rancho Santa Rosa is planted to 8 acres of Syrah. Planted on a sheltered eastern-facing hillside, the site-specific conditions, coupled with Santa Barbara's arid climate, allows the Syrah to reach a flavor-developed maturity even in such a cool growing region as the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Aged in French oak casks for 16 months before being racked, settled and bottled in late-January 2005. Dark in color, aromas of blueberry, cassis and black cherry intertwine with vibrant notes of white pepper, espresso and vanilla in the bouquet. A dense wine, the body is fleshy with fantastic structure. Firm tannins soften out in the long finish.

Varietal Definition
Syrah:
Syrah is the eight hundred pound gorilla of Rhone grapes! In the vineyard and the winery, Syrah is typically an easy grape to work with - healthy, early ripening, resistant to mildew and rot; suitable for winemaking in a variety of styles. The wines from Syrah are tannic without being harsh. The wines will have a taste and smell of dark blue fruit like blackberries and blackcurrant, with a strong spicy side where one can find freshly ground pepper and other spices. Syrah is famous for its part in the French blends, such as Côtes du Rhone and Châteauneuf du Pape.
