Angeli Syrah

Angeli (Syrah) Wine Details
Price:

Description: This wine is produced primarily from grapes grown in our most mature vineyards at the estate. The budwood in these older grafted syrah vines comes from cuttings originally cultivated at the famous Durrell Vineyard in Sonoma County. Due to the Durrell clone’s naturally low productivity, especially after it has reached a vine age of 10 years, it is now somewhat obscure (alas, the original Durrell syrah vines were ripped out when Kendall Jackson purchased the property). Our Durrell clone of syrah produces meager quantities of grapes (one ton per acre), but they more than make up for their lack of quantity in quality. The berries, always very small with thick skins and dark pigments, produce wines of tremendous character.

Varietal Definition
Syrah:
Syrah is the eight hundred pound gorilla of Rhone grapes! In the vineyard and the winery, Syrah is typically an easy grape to work with - healthy, early ripening, resistant to mildew and rot; suitable for winemaking in a variety of styles. The wines from Syrah are tannic without being harsh. The wines will have a taste and smell of dark blue fruit like blackberries and blackcurrant, with a strong spicy side where one can find freshly ground pepper and other spices. Syrah is famous for its part in the French blends, such as Côtes du Rhone and Châteauneuf du Pape.
