Syrah, La Grande

Syrah, La Grande Wine Details
Price: $19.50 per bottle

Description: After making Syrah for many years from the Estrella River clone (traced back to the vineyards of Chapoutier in the Northern Rhone), we started contracting for some fruit from a grower that has Clone 1 Syrah from UC Davis. The fruit is very different than what we have growing here on our Estate. It produces a bigger wine with more leather and spice characteristics and not as much up front red fruit. We thought the name should relay that to the consumer and so “La Grande” Syrah or “the big” Syrah came to be. Inky purple in color with aromas of currant, blackberry jam and layers of smoke and leather, intense flavors of black pepper, clove, and leather followed by hints of toast and black fruits. The structure is round with velvety tannins and balanced acidity. We enjoy this paired with braised lamb shanks in a red wine reduction or Eggplant Parmesan.

Varietal Definition
Syrah:
Syrah is the eight hundred pound gorilla of Rhone grapes! In the vineyard and the winery, Syrah is typically an easy grape to work with - healthy, early ripening, resistant to mildew and rot; suitable for winemaking in a variety of styles. The wines from Syrah are tannic without being harsh. The wines will have a taste and smell of dark blue fruit like blackberries and blackcurrant, with a strong spicy side where one can find freshly ground pepper and other spices. Syrah is famous for its part in the French blends, such as Côtes du Rhone and Châteauneuf du Pape.
