Private Sangiovese

Private Reserve Sangiovese Wine Details
Price: $13.00 per bottle

Description: The Guglielmo family proudly offers this Cal-Italia wine in celebration of the rich Old World winemaking tradition. The Sangiovese is the predominate grape variety used to produce the Italian Chianti Classicos. Our 2003 Private Reserve Sangiovese was produced from grapes grown in our own Santa Clara Valley. After fermentation the wine was aged in American oak barrels for nine months. Our stylistic goal with the Sangiovese is a subtle oak background with an emphasis on the grape’s charming fruit components. The wine opens in the glass with a vibrant & lively array of pomegranate and ripe plum aromas enhanced by a wisp of cedar. On the palate the dark fruit characters develop and evolve into a warm and lingering finish dusted with white pepper. It lends itself to a wide variety of foods including rare red meats, game birds, or spicy red-sauced pasta dishes. We produced 900 cases of this 2003 vintage.

Varietal Definition
Sangiovese:
Sanguis Jovis, the Latin origin for the varietal name, literally means “blood of Jove.” Sangiovese is one of the oldest known varietals and it is likely that ancient Etruscan winemakers cultivated it, although the first literary reference to Sangiovese was in 1722. Sangiovese is probably indigenous to Tuscany, whose most famous wine is Chianti. Chianti is a blend that currently contains a minimum of 90% Sangiovese.Sangiovese thrives in hot dry climates. Because these climatic criteria generally enhance quantity, rather than quality, it takes careful cultivation and winemaking techniques to produce really excellent wine from this grape.
