This red grape gained its notoriety in France 's Rhone Valley . It has also become famous in South Africa and Australia , where it is called Shiraz . Syrah's are tannic and very dark in color. They abound with flavors of black currant and plums as well as black pepper and spice. The Syrah vineyards that Dean uses are located in The Dalles region of Oregon along the Columbia River Gorge.
