(Pronounced "pee-nOH gree-zOH"). Popular synonym name of the Pinot Gris where grown in Italy and the Alsace region of France. The purple grape variety can create crisp, dry wines with good acid "bite" where grown in cool climate regions such as the Alto-Adige/Trentino regions of N. Italy. Pinot Gris can be picked early and pressed whole berry to maximize it crisp character or let hang on good years for a more fruity and softer version. Pinkish-white variety producing a very crisp white wine. Grown in Oregon, the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, and more and more in California, it shows promise for other cool climates. Also known as Tokay d'Alsace in France, Rulander in Germany, and Pinot Grigio in Italy.
