Koenig Winery

Koenig Winery Koenig Distillery and Winery combines Old World brandy and wine making traditions with some of the Northwest's finest fruit to produce classic European eau-de-vie fruit brandies and premium varietal wines. For over three generations, the Sunny Slope area has been synonymous with the highest quality fruit. Long summer days, cool nights and the temperate influence of the Snake River create an ideal climate for growing aromatic fruit and premium wine grapes. Fertile, sandy soils and high altitude add an extra dimension exclusive to this portion of the Snake River Valley. Aware of the potential quality of brandy distilled from fruit grown in this area, Andy and Greg Koenig set out to establish a small orchard and vineyard on a site near the river. Peach, apricot, plum, pear and cherry varieties known for their flavor were planted in 1995, with a small vineyard of Merlot, Semillon and Chardonnay being added a year later. Harvests from these plantings comprises the majority of Koenig brandies and wines, with additional varieties purchased from neighboring growers to enhance the selection of estate-grown fruit.

Products

  Bitner Vineyard Chardonnay
In 2002 we continued our commitment to single vineyard wines with this bottling of Bitner Vineyard Chardonnay. Grapes from this vineyard are hand picked and fermented in fine French oak barrels in our cool underground cellar. Aging sur-lie for 10 months adds hazelnut and toasted oak aromas to the bright mineral and citrus-like fruit typical of this vineyard. This wine is best with seafood and risotto now, and will continue to gain richness up to 10 years in the cellar.
  Ice Wine Windridge Vineyard Idaho
In the tradition of our Austrian heritage, hand-picked Riesling grapes from the acclaimed Windridge Vineyard high above the Snake River Valley were pressed while frozen in the cold days of early February. The diminutive amount of resulting juice was then cool fermented into this decadently sweet, intensely flavorful wine. It is a wonderful match for any occasion in need of the perfect dessert. Enjoy!
  Idaho Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine was produced entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in the deep, sandy soils of nearby Bitner Vineyard. Dark berry and black current flavors typical of this tiny vineyard block are enhanced by aging in fine oak barrels for 22 months. Smooth and enjoyable now, Cabernets from this vineyard will soften with additional cellaring. 200 cases produced.
  Idaho Cuvee Alden
This Private Reserve was produced in honor of the birth of our son Alden Hayward Koenig on November 1, 2001. It is comprised of the finest lots of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (40%), and Cabernet Franc (5%), and was aged in new French oak barrels for 2 years. Cheers Alden!
  Idaho Merlot
  Koenig Huckleberry Vodka
Koenig Distillery macerates hand-picked, wild huckleberries in vodka and then slowly distills them in our custom-made copper stills. The resulting all-natural spirit has a wonderful ripe berry aroma and a slightly sweet flavor that blends extremely well with other spirits, champagne and freshly squeezed fruit to make unusual and elegant cocktails. One of our favorite ways to enjoy it is mixed with fresh lemonade.
  Koenig Potato Vodka
We carefully craft our super-premium vodka slowly, one batch at a time in hand-hammered copper pot stills made by world-renowned German coppersmiths. Andrew Koenig, our award-winning master distiller, trained in 400 year old facility in the Austrian Alps where the careful methods and traditions of distilling have been perfected for centuries. This knowledge and skill is carefully applied to the unique qualities of potatoes resulting in a vodka of unsurpassed smoothness. The small batches take more time and potatoes are more difficult to distill but the final product has a quality, consistency and elegance not obtained by any other method.
  Late Harvest Riesling
83 points Wine Spectator, Soft, with some lime candy and green apple fruit. Moderate finish. Drink now.
  Pinot Noir Albers Vineyards
This Pinot Noir is the second vintage produced from the beautifully manicured Albers Family Vineyard. The rocky, chalk-laded soils of this site are ideally suite to this Burgundian varietal, producing a delicate Pinot Noir with aromas of raspberry and cherry, accented by aging in fine French oak barrels for 14 months.
  Semillon-Chardonnay Estate
This Blend of 55% Semillon and 45% Chardonnay is the only white wine produced of grapes from our small Estate Vineyard. Bright Citrus aromas from the Semillon balance the creamy, rich texture of Chardonnay in a wine best enjoyed with light pasta dishes, fresh seafood or summer appetizers.
  Syrah Three Vineyard Cuvee
In 2002 we crafted a tiny amount of Syrah from three distinctly different vineyards.: Williamson, Hells Canyon and Albers. Each site contributes its own unique characteristics to the final blend, resulting in a rich, velvety expression expression of the Syrah grape grown in the diverse landscape that is Southwest Idaho.
  Viognier Williamson Vineyard
The ancient Rhone Valley varital Viognier has shown great promise in the soils and climate of the Snake River Valley. and we proudly offer our second vintage of this exciting new varietal. Floral aromas and flavors reminiscent of apricots and white peaches make this delightful wine enjoyable chilled by itself or with light appetizers, seafood and delicate pasta.
