Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery

Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery Westport Rivers is a family owned vineyard and winery producing worldclass estate wines from New England's largest vineyard. Our wines include traditional method sparkling wines, Chardonnay, Rosé of Pinot Noir, Riesling and other Alsation varietals. Our appellation is Southeastern New England which stretches from Hyannis, Massachusetts through Rhode Island, to New London, Connecticut, reaches only 15 miles inland and includes Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. We are best known for extraordinary sparkling wines which rival any from around the globe. As Madeleine Kamman (Chef, Educator and Award-Winning Cookbook Author) has noted, "They can't do this in California; many in France are not this good." In addition, we make a variety of exciting table wines. In particular, our chardonnay is stylish with wonderful acidity and lots of fruit. The New York Times notes that our chardonnay is "virtually flawless". Westport Rivers began in 1982 when Bob & Carol Russell bought an old dairy farm in Westport, Massachusetts. Several years later, the vines arrived as did their oldest son, Rob. Rob and his crew planted the first vines in 1986 and our vineyard has grown into the largest vineyard in New England (and it is all vinifera). Bill Russell, Bob & Carol's second son, joined the team in 1989 to begin making wine. The winery opened to the public during the summer of 1991.

Products

  2006 Westport Brut RJR
A traditional blend of chardonnay and pinot noir; superb with loads of lovely frothy mousse. Lively aromas of pear, apple, white cherry and subtle toast float over flavors of bright fruit and mouthwatering acidity.
  Blanc de Blancs
Our Blanc de Blancs is absolutely one of the most spectacular sparkling wines grown in the USA. With 10 years on the yeast, the crisp apples and dry toast are dazzling on the palate. Crisp and superbly dry with a wonderful balance of fruit, yeast and acidity. If you love oysters on the half shell, there is no better accompaniment
  Blanc de Noirs
87% Estate Pinot Noir, 13% Estate Pinot Meunier. Lovely salmon colored wine with simply gorgeous flavors of berries and cream. Soft supple fruitiness gives way to a focused, clean finish.
  Chardonnay
Our most popular wine is a bright, fruit driven wine with aromas of apple blossom and cream highlighted by a hint of mineral, lemon and subtle fresh green tea. This is a classic east coast style chardonnay wherein fruit and acidity make for the enticement and it is fabulously flexible with food.
  Cinco Caes
Aromas of apple blossom, citrus rind and lemongrass round up this off-dry, easy drinking white blend. Medium bodied with a lingering finish.
  Gruner Veltliner
Since planting Gruner Veltliner in 1986, we’ve watched the popularity of the grand wine of Austria climb and climb. Pale straw color with alluring floral, citrus aroma of honeysuckle and lime. Bright acidity, dry finish with lingering citrus.
  Pinot Noir
Bright ripe cherry aroma with earthy tones & floral notes; brimming with a fruit-filled palate of cherry, red currant and plum. Medium weight and gorgeously textured with pleasingly ripe tannins. Finishes with a charming, fruity afterglow. Only 600 cases made. Ready to drink now or age for up to 6 years.
  Pinot Noir Rosé
We've been making dry rosé since 1998. That is almost a decade before the category of dry Rosé was rediscovered by the press and the CWM (California Wine Machine). Why do we make it? The same reason we make sparkling wine or dry, crisp, fruit centered chardonnay. This is what Westport soil & climate is great for making. This is what we do naturally. Attractive bright rose color, the wine has a fascinating, complex bouquet with berries, rose petal and a touch of cotton candy. The palate is generous - round and soft yet brisk and firm with wonderfully balanced acidity and richness. The wine finishes with a lingering fruitiness. Our most versatile food wine - pairs well with many dishes from vegetarian to beef and spicy, smoky flavors or exotic spices in Indian and Thai food.
  Riesling
Vibrantly tropical with sweet tamarind, quince and tangerine aroma. Awash with fruit on the palate and a deliciously tart finish. Medium bodied and off dry.
  Rkatsiteli
The great wine grape of Russia, Rkatsiteli, is the sixth most planted white grape of the world yet nearly unheard of in the United States. Wonderful acidity, a pleasant spicy, floral character and a hint of sweetness make this wine simply delicious.
