Arrowhead Spring Vineyards

Arrowhead Spring Vineyards Our vineyard is located in the Niagara Escarpment American Viticultural Area wine-growing region. The hills that support our vines slope from South-East to North-West. We have 65 rows of grapes planted, divided amongst the varietals of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. Someday, our entire farm will be dedicated to growing vinifera. We employ rigorous adherence to low yield practices to increase the fruit intensity . Meticulous sorting methods ensure that only the best fruit will make it into our wines. Planting a vineyard is not a mere matter of sticking a vine into dirt. Vinifera vines must first be grafted onto native rootstock. The rootstock is carefully selected for soil conditions. Then, the vine clone is chosen. Within one family of vinifera, clones can yield various characteristics, such as cluster weight, sugar content, and foliage attributes. The winemaker himself plays a critical role in selecting which plants best suit the vineyard and objectives of the winemaking. We planted our vineyard on a cool day in May of 2006. We used the services of a vineyard planting company that could align our rows using GPS. Our rows are spaced 8 feet apart; with vines at a 4.5 foot plant spacing. The planter itself is a wheeled mechanism, pulled behind a heavy-duty John Deere tractor. One person drives the tractor, carefully aligning each row. Two people sit on the back placing vines into the planting wheel. The rest of the crew prepares vines for each trip down a row. Planting our vineyard was an exciting, 12 hour affair on a sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy day.
