Claiborne & Churchill Vintners

Claiborne & Churchill Vintners Claiborne & Churchill is a small, family-owned winery founded in 1983 by Claiborne (Clay) Thompson and Fredericka Churchill. Former teachers at the University of Michigan (Clay specialized in Old Norse Languages and Literatures and Fredericka taught German), the couple left the "Groves of Academe" for the vineyards of California in 1981 in order to start a new life in the wine industry. Clay began as a "cellar rat" in a local winery, learning the business from the ground up (actually underground), and soon the two were encouraged to start their own wine production in that host facility.

  Dry Gewurztraminer, Central Coast
Unmistakably intense and aromatic, Gewürztraminer has been the flagship variety at Claiborne & Churchill since our founding in 1983. We rely upon traditional winemaking techniques, such as whole cluster pressing, native yeast fermentation in neutral oak barrels, and extended lees contact to produce a wine that shows complexity, mouthfeel, and balance. It is no exaggeration to say that Claiborne & Churchill is one of the world's premier producers of this variety. In a recent compilation of wine competition results, our Gewurztraminer was ranked number one in awards received, and far ahead of its nearest competitor, To quote one wine critic: "Nobody does it better."
  Dry Riesling, Central Coast
We are impressed by the fruit, length, minerality and the finesse of the 2005 vintage. Unmistakable aromas of kaffir lime and white peach greet you from the glass, balancing racy acidity and rich fruit. Although fresh and lovely in its youth, this is unquestionably a wine with the ability to age well under proper cellar conditions, developing nuance and character as it reaches maturity over the next decade or more.
  Grenache
  Pinot Gris
  Pinot Noir, Edna Valley AVA
The 2004 Edna Valley Pinot Noir is an assemblage from several vineyards within the Edna Valley AVA. We have made use of some excellent fruit from four different clones of Pinot Noir grown at Wolff Vineyards, and of course we have made the most of our close relationship with our neighbors across the road who grow the "Twin Creeks" fruit, which is sold exclusively to us. Five different sources of "Twin Creeks" fruit are represented in our 2004 Pinot Noir.
  Pinot Noir, Edna Valley AVA
The 2001 Edna Valley Pinot Noir is an assemblage from several vineyards within the Edna Valley AVA. We have made use of fruit from the Edna Ranch and Salaal vineyards for several vintages, and they play a large role in this wine, with their familiar raspberry and floral flavors. 2001 also marks the first harvest from the Twin Creeks Vineyard, a planting of Pinot Noir in partnership with our winery that is just beginning to produce fruit of exciting potential. A small amount of wine from one of the 6 Twin Creeks blocks contributes color, tannin structure, and depth to this bottling.
