Where family and friends are near, time moves a little more slowly and we pause to listen to the beat of the rhythm of life.
Kenneth (Gus) Haik founded Cajun Spirits Distillery in 2010. Born and raised in Uptown New Orleans, Gus attended Ben Franklin High School and then left New Orleans for the Navy. He graduated in the class of 2002 from the U.S. Naval Academy and travelled the world as an officer in the U.S. Navy.
It was at sea that Gus, an engineer, fell in love with distilling while responsible for the transformation of seawater to potable water for a crew of 225 sailors. Gus loved turning a raw substance like seawater into something as precious as drinking (and bathing) water.
But like so many New Orleanians, 10 years away from home had taught Gus just how unique and special New Orleans is. His future wife—also from New Orleans—had made Gus promise to come home when his commitment to the Navy was fulfilled. And anyways, Gus couldn’t find any live music or marching bands as good anywhere else.
After spending some time working as a welder in various refineries and working at another distillery, Gus concluded it was time to launch his own endeavor. He wanted to do something that used Louisiana agricultural goods and also catered to the craft bartender movement starting to take hold in New Orleans. He wanted to make products that New Orleanians would be proud to call their own; to start a new spirits tradition for New Orleans.
In 2010 Gus began the arduous process of starting a distillery. While working at a local Liquids Terminal, he found some investors, bought a warehouse in the industrial part of the 3rd ward and had a little girl.
Quality equipment and a quality process help to guarantee quality results for all of our products at Cajun Spirits Distillery. For this reason we invested in custom copper skills made in Germany specifically for our Poydras Street distillery. We constantly refine our process and the union of efficiency and flavor while retaining the imagination and inspiration you expect from a New Orleans spirit. We seek to bring you the best products at the best price possible.
