Junius Lindsay Vineyard

Junius Lindsay Vineyard The vineyard is named for my grandfather, Junius Lindsay Zimmerman, who with his bride, Beatrice Estelle Evans, started Zimmerman Farm in 1894. Lindsay was the proprietor of The Arcadia Mill and farmed, while Beatrice raised five children and taught school. One son, Lee, returned to the homeplace with his new wife, Cornelia Sink, in 1933. A soil scientist with the Soil Conservation Service, my father knew more about this land than anybody before or since. Since moving back to the homeplace in the 1990’s, the goal has been to preserve the farm for future generations. Recognizing the growing interest in wine in North Carolina, we set about to see if such an idea would work for us. The first two acres were planted in 2004, growing to nine acres two years later. The plan is to plant two more acres next year. The starting vinifera was Viognier, a rare white variety that originated in Condrieu, on France's Northern Rhône River, that traces its heritage back over 2000 years. Later, other varietals were added: Syrah, Petite Sirah (durif), and Roussanne. Next year they will be joined by Grenache Noir. Our boutique vineyard serves estate-bottled, nationally acclaimed French-style wines. All of the grape varietals are native to the Rhône Valley of Southern France. While we call ourselves “Rhône Rangers,” the overriding goal is to produce wine that reflects the unique characteristics of the vineyard’s soil and microclimate, very much in the Old World fashion.

  Estelle Dessert Wine
Estelle Estelle, named in honor of my grandmother, is made from the same Viognier grapes with aromas of ripe apricot, papaya and passion fruit. The fruitiness is intertwined with a delicate blend of clove, cinnamon and coriander. It is an excellent complement to your favorite dessert or cheese. One critic suggested matching "this mouth coating Viognier with Dark Chocolate or Crème Brûlée for a 'knock it out of the park' experience."
  Metro Red
A racy, sophisticated blend of syrah and petite sirah, Metro carries you away with bursts of black cherry and raspberry. Metro is characteristically smoky with undertones of chocolate and pepper. Enjoy chilled as an aperitif, or at room temperature with grilled meats or spicy cuisine.
  Party Line Red
A blend of Barrel Select Syrah and Petite Sirah perfect for all outdoor grilling. Aromas of incense, black pepper and sage.
  Petite Sirah, Estate Bottled
The creation of this wine as a single varietal has allowed its true merits to shine. Wild berry notes followed by cinnamon, crushed plum and pie crust delight the initial palette. Rich raspberry jam and mouth filling red and black berry compote dominate the middle. White pepper, dusty minerality, and a long luscious finish complete the appeal of this second harvest wine. The potential of this varietal from this vineyard has been firmly established.
  Second Leaf Viognier-Roussanne
The bouquet exudes intense aromas of Viognier’s peach and apricot in a marriage with Roussanne’s tropical melons, fresh cut hay and oil of orange. It has an unusually long, nutmeg spice finish. It will bring out the best in rich seafood and shellfish dishes and with spicier fare like Thai dishes.
  Special Delivery Rosé
The nose overflows with strawberry, rhubarb, lime peel and rose petals, surprisingly dry but offset by refreshing acidity. Drink it chilled or with grilled food.
  Syrah, Estate Bottled
This Syrah has been called "a true , Old World style" wine. It explodes with aromas of Black Currants and plums, with hints of leather and incense.
  Triomphe Red
This marvelous blend of Syrah and Viognier exhibits aromas of red cranberry, crushed plum, exotic floral notes and smoky bacon. A sweet profusion of cinnamon and allspice is followed by a cornucopia of Provençal spices of lavender, sage and savory.
  Viognier, Estate Bottled
This is the fourth vintage from vines that have produced rich, aromatic wine. Vinted by award-winning winemaker Mark Friszolowski this Viognier hints of White Peach, Honeydew Melon and ripe Canteloupe. This Viognier is abundantly floral, and bursts with aromas of honeysuckle and gardenias. An incredible acid balance allows some limestone notes to dance on the finish.
