With a name like Bierling, what other profession could you go into besides something that involves grain and yeast? From a long line of bakers and brewers, Joel Bierling has always had a more than passing love of all things yeasty. Some consulting with Mr. and Mrs. Beer boosted his interest. Experimentation and cider making followed, only to be usurped by a fascination with taking it to the next level with distilled beverages. And so a dream was born. To open a micro-distillery and serve up his own craft distilled product. Bier Distillery was the result.
Much market research followed. He (with family in tow) walked the hallowed halls of some of Kentucky and Tennessee’s most famous distillers. In order to make a thorough study of the business marketplace, distilleries in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan were also patronized. How else to formulate a workable business plan?
