Bargetto Winery

Bargetto Winery The Bargetto winemaking heritage began with brothers Phillip and John Bargetto who emigrated from Castelnuovo Don Bosco, a small town in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. They brought with them years of winegrowing experience when they established BARGETTO WINERY on the banks of Soquel Creek in California. Phillip was the first to depart Italy in 1891 at the age of seventeen. In the early years, he worked in the vineyards of Casa Delmas Winery in Mountain View. In 1909, he was joined in California by his brother, John. By 1913, they had become partners in an apple ranch near Zayante in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where they grew and sold fruits and vegetables. 1928 photo of Adelaide Bargetto, seated between her two sons, Phillip and John, and in front of her six daughters—Sandrina, Annetta, Secondina, Angelina, Maddalena, Antonia. Phillip and John purchased the present site of BARGETTO WINERY in 1918 and began making wine out of an old barn on the property. During Prohibition (1919-1933), the brothers continued to make wine for family and friends, while they continued to sell produce to local customers. They also grew apples at the family ranch in Soquel. When Prohibition ended in 1933, the brothers devoted more time to the wine business. They began a wine wholesale business, while they continued to sell produce wholesale. Phillip Bargetto passed away in 1936 and John was left the sole owner of the business throughout the 1940s and 1950s. He continued to produce wine and sell wholesale and retail. He was joined by his sons Ralph and Lawrence during these years. The Next Generation: The Bargetto Family winemaking heritage continued with John's son Lawrence during the 1960s and 1970s. He introduced modern technology such as stainless steel fermentation, barrel aging, and added new Santa Cruz Mountains varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He also created the CHAUCER'S line of dessert-style wines. Today: The third generation of Bargettos now direct the operation of the winery. BARGETTO WINERY represents the oldest continuous-operation winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Their pioneering spirit continued with the establishment of Bargetto Regan Vineyard Estate, near Corralitos, California in 1992. Here, cool-climate varietals like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Grigio are carefully nurtured to produce BARGETTO WINERY's estate wines. In keeping with the family heritage, the winery has also begun to experiment with northern Italian varietals grown in it's estate vineyard.

  CHAUCER'S Mead
This wine is produced utilizing fresh honey without the addition of artificial flavorings, concentrates or artificial colorings. Even though greater production difficulties ensue because pure, raw honey is used for fermentation, the intensity of flavor generated through this technique is worth the effort. Although, this wine exhibits a richness similar to a fine liqueur, this dessert-style beverage is not fortified and contains only 10.5% alcohol. Hence, this wine should be consumed shortly after purchase to enjoy its natural and rich honey flavor. The Mead can be enjoyed in one of two ways, either chilled or heated with spices to create a delicious wintery drink.
  CHAUCER'S Olallieberry
"Olallie" is a word for berry that was used by Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. An olallieberry is a hybrid cross of a loganberry and a youngberry which are both crosses themselves (loganberry = raspberry x blackberry; youngberry = blackberry x Texas dewberry). Because the olallieberry has blackberry forebearers on both sides of its parentage, it is not surprising that it exhibits many of the same flavor characteristics. However, olallieberries are much larger in size and generally are sweeter than blackberries grown under the same conditions. Although this wine exhibits a richness similar to a fine liqueur, this specialty dessert-style beverage is not fortified and contains only 10.5% alcohol. Hence, this wine should be consumed shortly after purchase to enjoy its natural and rich fruit flavor. It is also recommended to refrigerate this delicate product after opening.
  CHAUCER'S Raspberry
This wine is produced utilizing whole fruit without the addition of artificial flavorings, concentrates or artificial colorings. Even though greater production difficulties ensue because of whole fruit fermentations, the intensity of flavor generated through this technique is worth the effort. Although this wine exhibits a richness similar to a fine liqueur, this specialty dessert-style beverage is not fortified and contains only 10.5% alcohol. Hence, this wine should be consumed shortly after purchase to enjoy its natural and rich flavor. It is also recommended to refrigerate this delicate product after opening.
  CHAUCER'S Raspberry Mead
A combination of CHAUCER'S Mead and Raspberry Wine, reminiscent of Melomel, a whole new world of mead appreciation has opened up. Raspberries explode from the glass with the heady aromas of spice and orange blossoms carried into the background from the mead. Less sweet than our regular mead, this wine finishes with a lingering crisp raspberry and honeysuckle impression.

  Lodi Carignane
We are pleased to be able to offer you another wine designed especially for your enjoyment. Rauser Vineyard was planted in 1909 along the banks of the Mokelumne River in Lodi. The climate allows the Carignane variety to develop the bright flavors of ripe cherries and spice. This wine is medium bodied and is an excellent choice for lighter cuisine or daily enjoyment.
  Lodi Zinfandel
The Lodi Zinfandel is full of berry and spice. Bright cherry and blackberry with an underlying rose violet on the nose. The medium tannin structure is lively with red fruits on the palate and a black pepper finish. Full and extracted, this wine is a complement to any hardy dish.
  Monterey County Gewurztraminer
The welcome return of the off-dry Gewurztraminer has been eagerly anticipated by many. This year we were able to secure several tons of grapes from the premium Monterey County grower, Schied Vineyards. The resulting wine is pure Gewurztraminer. It has a spicey nose with lemon, honeysuckle, and floral notes that are mirrored in the mouth. The 2004 vintage is slightly less sweet than previous vintages. Even so, it still has a healthy 1 gram per liter of residual sugar.
  Monterey County Syrah
Our 2002 Syrah is a full bodied wine with a deep purple hue. Floral and blueberry accents are found in the wine. Soft round tannins are also noticed with a hint of cedar in the background. This wine is made for current consumption but will age gracefully for the next three years.
  Reserve Santa Cruz Mountains Merlot
This is a dark well-structured Merlot with lots of berry flavors. The fruit is complemented with vanilla and oak aromas. The wine is supported by velvety tannins. As a Reserve style wine, this Merlot will age well over the next few years.
Reserve Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
There are 3 clones of Pinot Noir planted at the Bargetto Regan Vineyard Estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains: Dijon, Pommard and Martini. All three clones bring important attributes to the wine. Dijon develops the distinctive cherry and plum aromas. Pommard adds high notes of perfume. The Martini clone brings depth to the color and structure of the wine. The resulting wine shows bright fruit and perfume aromas with a silky smoothness to the body. The finish is extracted and shows soft oak vanillin. This wine, while enjoyable now, should age gracefully for 3-5 years.
  Santa Barbara County Muscat Canelli
Muscat is a variety that is no stranger to BARGETTO WINERY. It is a grape that lends itself to many styles. So, it is with much excitement that we are presenting an exclusive offering to our CHAUCERS Wine Club, a Late Harvest Muscat. This wine abounds with honeysuckle and apricot. Lush in texture and silky smooth in finish this wine is a wonderful accompaniment to any lighter dessert. Light enough in texture, it also would be a wonderful quaff on a summer afternoon. This wine displays nothing but fun
  Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
The 1999 Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon displays deep cherry and berry aromas backed by a hint of briar. Chocolate and sweet, smoky oak fill in the aroma profile. Flavors carry in the ripe cherry expressions with a sweet oak backbone that gives way to a supple, rich finish. This wine is styled for aging and should improve with 3-5 years cellaring.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay
The Mt. Eden clone of Chardonnay has a significant impact in the rich quality of this estate grown wine. This unique clone of Chardonnay was brought to the Santa Cruz Mountains in the 19th Century by Paul Masson from the Corton-Charlemagne Vineyard in Burgundy. To this day this clone remains almost exclusively in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Mt. Eden clone Chardonnay lends itself quite well to the cool, marine influenced, climate of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Ripe tropical fruit abounds in the 2001 vintage. Full, rich and supple, the flavors linger to a smoky sweet oak finish. Firm natural acidity gives the wine structure to allow for cellaring. This vintage is one of the best to come from Regan Vineyards and the wine is expected to age gracefully for 3-5 years.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay
This wine is a powerful rendering of SCM Chardonnay. In the nose are aromas of citrus and jasmine. A portion of this wine was aged in new barrels which shows in the palate in a delicate manner. This wine is enjoyable now but has some aging potential.
Santa Cruz Mountains Late Harvest Gewurztraminer
This dessert style Gewurztraminer displays all the attributes that we come to expect from this grape. The aromas of jasmine, honeysuckle, and citrus jump out of the glass. The flavors of cinnamon, clove, and citrus dominate the mouth. The wine will be a rousing finale to any meal.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Merlot
The grapes from this Santa Cruz Mountain Merlot came exclusively from Regan, our estate Vineyard. The cool climate growing condition is responsible for producing an intense dark cherry and berry aroma in this wine. There is black pepper spice with hints of tobacco and menthol. The wine has firm tannins with a full mouthful and will continue to develop into the bottle for the next 3-5 years.
  Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
There are three clones of Pinot Noir planted at the Bargetto Regan Vineyard Estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains: Dijon, Pommard and Martini. This wine is a blend of all three clones. It was a difficult year for Pinot Noir at the Regan Vineyard, and because of this tonnage was low, but the fruit was richer in flavor and color. Pommard, which is the largest constituent at 40%, brings the high notes of perfume to the wine. The wine exhibits flavors of dark cherry, oak and blackberry. This wine has an intensity of color which is unusual for Pinot Noir as Pinot's have a tendency to be lighter in color than most other red wines. There is a firm structure of soft tannins which will give this wine aging potential.
  Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc
This refreshing white is an ideal summer wine to be enjoyed now. With floral hints backed up with lime, apricot, and honeysuckle, followed through in the mouth with a little spice. It is a crisp white with a long finish, and would go well with anything from Fettucini Alfredo to spicy Thai food
