Mari Vineyards, makers of specialty red wines, is nestled on the Old Mission peninsula, an 18-mile long strip of land that divides the Grand Traverse Bay in Northern Michigan at the 45th parallel, half way between the Equator and the North Pole. The Old Mission Peninsula's cool climate has sprung forth some fine quality white wines, but the short growing season, unpredictable frosts and harsh winter provide challenges for producing consistent vintage red wines.
Villa Mari Vineyards has developed an innovative approach to viticulture to overcome those challenges. In order to be assured that the maturation of grapes is not affected by cool late spring and early fall temperatures, Villa Mari grows its grapes under the protection of heat-capturing canopies. Charting a brand new course for wine-making in the area, Villa Mari has acquired a fresh reputation for its red wines of complex and rich characteristics. Villa Mari Vineyards holds private outdoor tasting events at the winery that is energized exclusively by wind power.
