Calera Wine Company

Calera Wine Company Calera is a vision, and Calera’s wines truly express the sense of place. Rather than follow the recommended path, Josh Jensen became a pioneer in search of the perfect spot on the globe to grow grapes. Taking his cue from the great domaines of Burgundy which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, he set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world but in the style of the greatest wines of France. Site selection was vital as he ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gavilan Mountains of California. Today Calera wines still express that pioneer spirit and are revered the world over. We are proud to report that even Robert Parker is convinced: "Calera is one of the most compelling Pinot Noir specialists of not only the New World, but of Planet Earth."

The deep dense red hue of the 2005 Central Coast Pinot Noir gives an indication of its complexity on the palate and rich texture. Sweet smelling scents of dark cherries and plum are entwined with notes of tea, briar and smoky oak. The flavors are fruitful and layered with a core of fine tannins and well-balanced acidity.
  Dessert Viognier
This golden-yellow dessert wine has an incredibly perfumed aroma, reminiscent of sun ripened peaches and sweet pineapple, with floral notes of honeysuckle and citrus blossoms. It is velvety smooth with excellent balance, good acidity and just the right level of sweetness.
  El Niño Chardonnay
The 2001 El Niño Chardonnay is very aromatic, its lovely Chardonnay character is accented with scents of ripe citrus fruit and fresh pineapple. The wine's smooth creamy texture and well rounded mid-palate are balanced with a pleasing crispness and a touch of oak on the finish.
  Mills Pinot Noir
The 2002 Mills is a forward and aromatic wine. Notes of ripe strawberries, black plums, black pepper and vanilla are prevalent in both aroma and flavor. As is characteristic of Pinot Noir from the Mills Vineyard this wine has excellent structure with a core of well defined tannin under its fleshy, velvety texture.
  Mills Pinot Noir
From Wine Spectator of July 31, 2005: "An alluring style that combines ripe, firm black cherry and sour cherry fruit with a mix of spices, giving it a touch of nutmeg and hazelnut. Tannins are firm on the finish, giving it an excellent structure. Drink now through 2011. 91 points." And WineSkinny.com, Aug.- Sept. 2005: "Rich ribbons of flavors include focused black cherry, blackberry, allspice, sweet earth, roasted nuts, and nicely integrated toasty oak. Continues to evolve through the long, lush finish. Ready to drink now and over the next five or six years."
  Mt. Harlan Chardonnay
The 2004 Mt. Harlan Chardonnay has a bit of everything, alluring aromas of apples, mandarin essence and vanilla, along with a very creamy unctuous texture. It shows great balance, with well-integrated acid, just a touch of restrained oak and an abundance of the minerality typical of Mt. Harlan's limestone soils.
  Mt. Harlan Cuvée
Mt. Harlan Cuvée is a barrel selection from our various single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and reflects a fascinating complement of personalities from each. This wine is fresh and fruity with appealing aromas of red cherries, sun-ripened stone fruits and sweet spice. It is a multi-dimensional wine, very approachable, supple and smooth on the palate, while at the same time showing surprising complexity and structure. The wine's excellent balance allows it to be enjoyed young, while its core of fine tannin will allow it to develop gracefully for several years.
  Ryan Pinot Noir
Complex aromas of blackberry, raspberry, wild herbs and delicate spice compliment the intense Pinot Noir character in the nose of the 2004 Ryan. While being both complex and intense this wine is very lively on the palate with ripe berry flavors that are enhanced with hints of black tea and sweet spice. This is a well-structured wine with vibrant flavor, pleasing texture, bright acidity and fine-grained tannin.
  Viognier
The 2005 Viognier is outstanding; its exuberant fragrance of ripe peaches and tropical blossoms literally explodes from the glass. The wine's mid-palate showcases its rich, luscious texture and its exotic flavor of summer fruits accented with distinct floral notes. The wine is an intersting combination of bright freshness, broad structure and complex minerality.
