They say necessity is the mother of invention. And when prohibition banned alcohol in 1920, a desperate necessity was born. Back-room dealings, bootleg smuggling and despicable crimes rose to uncontrollable levels (the total opposite of what the 18th Amendment set out to do, right?). But they also say where there’s a will, there’s a way. Or as was the case at the neighborhood speakeasy, where there was a chemist there was a way. And the longer the ‘dry’ spell continued, the more inventive chemists became, turning contraband bars into happy-hour science labs. Now that’s our kind of invention.
