Brander Vineyard

Brander Vineyard C. Frederic "Fred" Brander, owner and winemaker, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He moved with his family and settled in Santa Barbara, California. Fred started his career in the wine business by working for a local wine merchant, and later went to work in the wholesale business. While attending college, he started his own wine import company, focusing on wines from France and Argentina. Wishing to make his own wines, and with a fondness for Santa Barbara, Fred and his family established The Brander Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley in 1975. The initial planting was mainly Bordeaux grape varietals and in 1977, the first Sauvignon Blanc grapes were taken to a neighboring winery where Fred Brander produced a wine so distinctive it captured Santa Barbara County's first gold medal for a wine at a major wine competition (1978 Los Angeles County Fair). Since its inception, the Brander Vineyard has been highly acclaimed as a top Sauvignon Blanc producer, and for many years the only Brander Vineyard wine was an estate-bottled Sauvignon Blanc. Today, the focus is still Sauvignon Blanc, with one main bottling and three distinctively different reserve wines. Two of these are named for the next Brander generation: Cuvée Natalie and Cuvée Nicolas; the third Sauvignon Blanc is the multiple award-winning au Naturel. A small quantity of red wine is also produced from estate grapes, featuring the classic Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc). As well as single varietal bottlings, extremely small amounts of Bouchet (a Bordeaux blend) and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon are offered.

Directions
The Brander Vineyard is located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley on Highway 154, two miles southeast of Los Olivos—a 40 minute drive north of Santa Barbara, and less than 2-1/2 hours from Los Angeles. The winery and tasting room are surrounded by the 43 acre vineyard.

  2000 Dos Mundos Malbec
A few years ago, Fred was in Mendoza, Argentina, for the harvest and came across an opportunity to team up with the Festa family, who own vineyards and a small winery there. Malbec is grown throughout Argentina, but in Mendoza it reaches a quality level that surpasses anywhere else in the world, including its native place of origin, southwest France. Our first effort is a big inky, ripe, and succulent Malbec that cries out for a juicy steak! Definitely world class.
  2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
85% Cabernet Sauvignon - 15% Merlot. A strong sequel to the inaugral Cabernet Reserve 2000, this wine was pulled out of oak after 11 months (50% new French) and aged in stainless fo an additional 6 months prior to bottling. Ripe cassis and cherry with bitter chocolate flavors and dusty tannins. All estate fruit from 26 year old vines grown on their own roots.
  2002 Bouchet, Tête de Cuvée
68% Cabernet Sauvignon - 24 % Cabernet Franc - 8 % Merlot. We picked the Cabernet Sauvignon the last week in October and the wait really paid off. Dark cherries, full-bodied and very pure fruit. Very dark color, spicy cassis fruit. Orange County Fair Gold Medal winner, 2004
  2002 Brander Bouillabaisse Rosé
An enigma, wrapped in a riddle, soaked in a conundrum...The wine's color would suggest a simple Provençal type rosé made from red Rhône varietals. The flavor and aroma betray a more complex story. As good as it gets, this rosé will not be made again since the base (97% Pinot Noir) is from our high density Pinot Noir block that was grafted to Sauvignon Gris in 2003. A splash of Syrah was added to perk up the rosé color.
  2002 Sauvignon Blanc, au Naturel
The 2002 bottling of au Naturel reflects a vintage whereby our estate Sauvignon Blanc ripened at lower sugar levels. Aromas of orange blossoms and lime with a hint of wild mint. The flavors are citrus, melon and grapefruit with no oak ageing to tame their brightness. Brisk acidity with a persistant minerality in the finish. Orange County Fair Gold Medal winner, 2004
  2003 Sauvignon Blanc, au Naturel
Low yields and excellent fruit quality at harvest gave us the raw material to make this intense, beautifully aromatic Sauvignon Blanc.
  Bouchet, Tête de Cuvée
88% Cabernet Sauvignon - 12 % Cabernet Franc. We picked the Cabernet Sauvignon the last week in October and the wait really paid off. Dark cherries, full-bodied and very pure fruit. Very dark color, spicy cassis fruit.
  Cabernet Sauvignon
h such a small crop of estate Cabernet Sauvignon in 2003 (and all of very high quality that went into the Reserve), we were left with only a couple of barrels of press wine for the Bouchet and none for our most affordable Cabernet. Fortunately, we were able to acquire a few tons of Plam Vineyard Cabernet that turned out exceptionally good.
  Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
A late harvest into the end fo October, impeccable fruit condition, and very low yields (1 ton per acre) with old vines produced our 2002 Cab Reserve. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
  Cuvée Natalie
An Alsatian-style Sauvignon. 45% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Sauvignon Gris, 13% Riesling, 6% Pinot Gris, 6% Pinot Blanc. A wonderful accompaniment for a warm afternoon or your favorite oriental fare. Fermented cold and kept in stainless steel tanks until bottling, the result is a floral style of Sauvignon.
  Cuvée Nicolas
Guava nectar, peach marmalade and grapefruit. This is a full-bodied wine with medium acidity, a firm mid-palate and a lingering finish. After a 24-hour soak on the skins, the wine was aged sur-lie in 50% new French Oak barrels. The final blend includes 25% Semillon.
  Merlot
Wonderful concentration with cherry fruit with soft tannins from cool fermentation. Four months in small French and American oak give this supple wine a touch of wood to complement but not mask its appealing regional identity.
  Sauvignon Blanc, Purisima Mountain Vineyard
This is a single-vineyard designated wine made from the beautiful fruit of the Purisima Vineyard. The vineyard lies in the rolling hills of the Ballard Canyon area, west of the town of Los Olivos. 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the wine has exuberant mineral notes and a lovely persistence in the finish.
  Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Ynez Valley,
Our release from the 2005 vintage - Sauvignon Blanc from the estate and neighboring vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley with a touch of Semillon and Pinot Blanc.
