From this country’s inception to the late 1890s, hard cider was America’s alcoholic beverage of choice. Today, it’s certainly making a comeback. But back in 1997, when the only U.S. ciders available were syrupy sweet concoctions, Original Sin founder Gidon Coll set out to be the first to reconnect America with its cider roots — seeking to create a dry, traditional cider with the complexity to satisfy today’s more discriminating palettes.
Gidon began this quest the only way he knew how. He immersed himself in the history and craft of cider, sourced superior apples and strains of yeast and, under the tutelage of a local wine expert, mixed and tested batch after batch in a small upstate New York winery. In between, he ventured from bar to bar in New York City’s Lower East Side and the East Village — many he frequented himself — sharing these batches with owners, managers and patrons, whose feedback helped shape Original Sin’s distinctive taste and character.
After six months of this exhausting process, the first bottles of Original Sin hard cider were picked up by establishments in Manhattan and Brooklyn. With no signifcant distributor early on, Gidon could often be seen hand delivering O.S. himself, lugging cases in and out of NYC subways. He and his friends even painstakingly hand labeled O.S. bottles before realizing, well, that was a little crazy. Yet it wasn’t long before O.S. began receiving wide acclaim from sources as diverse as The New York Times, New York Post, Paper Magazine and Market Watch.
Today, you can find our unique, award-winning ciders in over 30 states, as well as overseas in the U.K. and Japan. But it all started here in New York — inspired by our country’s past to bring a clean, crisp cider into the future.
