The name "Toad-A-Lope" refers to land located north of the Platte River in Smithville, Mo., which includes the Ladoga Ridge site. It is believed a local resident, back in the early 1900s, named the area and it stuck with the community for a number of decades thereafter. People living in the portion of Smithville were referred to as "Toad-A-Lopers." Although not confirmed, some believe the meaning of "Toad-A-Lope" is an Indian term meaning "Heaven."
