Canyon Wind Cellars

Canyon Wind Cellars After spending three or four years in the late eighties traveling the world looking for a site to begin our wine growing adventure, we realized that we wouldn’t have to sacrifice and leave our long adopted and much loved Colorado and its mountains because we found the perfect place right in our own backyard. Western Colorado along the banks of the Colorado River proved to be the ideal spot. Not only were the climate and soil similar to the fine vineyard area of eastern Washington but the area also had a reputation for growing some of the most flavorful fruit (peaches, plums and cherries) in the country. It was a 1990 grape growing seminar held in Palisade, Colorado, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Association of Vinters and Viticulturists, that caught our attention and finally focused our efforts. With the information gleaned there and a good measure of enthusiasm we soon acquired a property that combined the benefits of the area (warm, sunny days with cool nights, plus low humidity) with some special benefits of our own little microclimate. Because our vineyard was situated on alluvial soil above the river and surrounded by the towering cliffs of the river’s canyon walls, all these wonderful features were greatly enhanced. But what most distinguished our ‘terroir’ was the daily flow of cool mountain breeze through the canyon mouth to wash over and regulate the vineyard’s temperature. So special, in fact, that we named the winery CANYON WIND in honor of this phenomenon.

We treated 47-Ten Red in a stainless steel tank with oak staves for nine months. This elegant soft red is a wonderful expression of the complexity of the Cabernet Sauvignon, the lightness of the Tempranillo, the fruit of the Merlot, the minerality of the Syrah, the floral characters of the Cabernet Franc and the spiciness of the Petit Verdot. Fermentation in separate lots and no extended maceration will ensure that this wine will be approachable and easy drinking for a long time to come! 1.869 cases produced. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Tempranillo, 12% Merlot, 12% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

Aged two years in French and American oak, with the additional usage of oak staves (2/3 French, 1/3 American), Boreas is a wine with dominant oak flavors and characteristics; including nutmeg, spice and vanilla.
  Anemoi Iapyx
Anemoi's first dessert wine! Named for the god of the Northwest wind, Iapyx, this Late Harvest Pinot Grigio will have you thanking the gods for producing such a delightfully smooth and sweet wine! This "Nectar of the Gods" enchants the nose with scents of lychee, apricot and honey. Flavors of apricot, clover honey and the slightest hint of cinnamon combine for a sumptuous mouthfeel and perfect sugar-acid balance.
  Anemoi Zephyrus
Anemoi's second release named for the god of the warm West wind, Zephyrus, is a blend of 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Petit Verdot with alluring scents of dark red fruit and black pepper, and a hint of cloves. Abundant cherries and raspberries and a sumptuous mouthfeel with a smooth, lingering finish make this a wine that you won?t soon forget.
  Cabernet Sauvignon
Since its first crush in 1996, Cabernet Sauvignon has been our most decorated and successful wine. Perfectly balanced, deep, dark and concentrated with the intense aromas of cassis, plum and mocha. Firm tannins intertwined with hints of chocolate, coffee and tobacco lead to an elegant finish. Colorado lamb would have a hard time to do better than this!
  Chardonnay
An elegant, refined, firmly structured wine. The nose shows the nine months of barrel aging with a rich creaminess and Madagascar vanilla. The nose continues with mineral infused pear, apricot and light spice. On the palate these flavors meld with a touch of toasty oak and citrus to provide the wine with a good body and delightful finish.
  Merlot
One of the original grapes planted in the vineyard when we started in 1991, the Merlot is continually one of our most successful and popular wines. A nice, light, balanced red wine that is both soft and spicy, the nose has nice scents of pine and cedar. Perfect for any occasion- this wine is not out of place at a picnic or a black tie dinner.
  Petit Verdot
A traditional Bordeaux varietal, it is only through a stroke of luck that Petit Verdot is part of the CWC family (ask us!). A dark, tannic, rich wine with violets, dark berries, black cherries and pepper, this wine is wonderful with hearty game.
  Pinot Grigio
Our Pinot Grigio is a balanced, floral wine with a very intriguing nose. Ripe pineapple follows hints of spice and apricot on the palate. This wine has good acidity, which adds to its lively presence and pleasing finish. The perfect wine to enjoy with light Italian food!
  Proprietor's Reserve Port
Our Port is only sold from the winery and online. We take our Cabernet Sauvignon to the Peach Street Distillers and have them make a wonderfully aromatic brandy. That Brandy is then added to our Cabernet Sauvignon grape that has received extra time to mature on the vine to make this delicious dessert wine.
  Sauvignon Blanc
One of the wines our winemaker, Bob Pepi, became famous for, our Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic, floral wine. This classic wine has a medium body and good acid presenting aromas of pear and banana. Bountiful grapefruit on the palate leads to a crisp, clean finish. Perfect in the heat of summer or with light seafood anytime.
  Syrah
A wonderfully intense version of this varietal with deep, rich color. Blackberry and cola aromas abound followed on the palate by a well-balanced, richly flavored medley of berry flavors, ending with a long finish. Enjoy with red meats, hearty stews and game.
