The vineyards of Ard Aven are located in the beautiful rolling foothills of Plymouth, California. The original 80 acres were purchased by my parents in 1963. In 1984, the opportunity arose for us to buy 20 acres from them. Over the following eight years I built our home and began to realize our vision for the perfect use of this land. In 1996 we began to plant our rolling hills in grapes and this is how our amazing vineyard began.
While raising three boys, all active in competitive snow sports, we continued to plant vines. Along with my full time job managing my construction company, our lives proved to be exciting, exhilarating, and exhausting, yet very fulfilling. During this time, we were able to experiment with different varietals and wine making styles. In 2002, we started producing wine, although with active growing boys and maturing vines, we didn’t feel we could commit to a full-fledged winery. We took this time to study the craft, enhance our wines, and create a well-functioning facility to produce and bottle outstanding wine. We feel that this time has allowed us to succeed in taking our wine to a higher altitude.
In 2010, we felt we were ready to “jump over the cliff” and open our cellar doors. Our boys have grown alongside our grapes. All three boys are still involved in competitive snow sports. In the off-season, we are lucky to have their help in the vineyard and winery. We are pleased and prideful to see them learning about the lands they love from snow covered terrain to grape covered terrain.
