Solitude Wines
|
|
Born and raised in California, Richard Litsch became interested in wine while attending the University of California, Davis. After obtaining his B.S. degree in 1983, he began work at Rombauer Vineyards. After two years in the Napa Valley, he was off to Australia, working a harvest and traveling extensively through both Australia and New Zealand's wine country.
Upon returning, Richard became Assistant Winemaker at Chalone Vineyard, and established Solitude Wines. The 1986 and 1987 Chardonnay vintages were sold only as futures, and further expansion in 1988 to 800 cases meant leaving Chalone to pursue Solitude full time. Richard's focus on Solitude includes direct sales in California to restaurants and retailers. He personally handles all sales calls, order processing and often delivers the wine himself. He also coordinates out of state sales with his distributors. Running his "one man show" business, in addition to winemaking, keeps Richard very busy! Today, Solitude produces 5000 cases of ultra premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Richard does not plan to expand further, but prefers to stay small and focus on high quality.

Chardonnay Carneros
The 2004 harvest produced another small crop of Chardonnay throughout the Carneros region. Tropical aromas of guava, banana and pineapple are typical of the cool Carneros region. Layers of rich oak are evident, but not overwhelming. The creamy mouthfeel has more depth and richness than normal, yet retains refreshing acids to keep the wine balanced. Our lowest production of Chardonnay in five years!

Pinot Noir "Rochioli VinVineyard"
These grapes come from the most famous Pinot Noir vineyard in California, and we strive to maintain the unique qualities of this site in our wine. Grapes from the "River Block", which was planted in 1989, tend to create wine of great clarity and vineyard character. This wine is characterized by classic aromas, elegance and strong aging potential. Very limited! The smallest quantity we have every produced.

Pinot Noir Carneros "Sangiacomo Vineyard"
We produce Pinot Noir using the traditional techniques of Burgundy. These include using whole clusters, a cold soak, punching down and no fining or filtration. A complex nose, with more red fruit than usual is complemented by vanilla, toast and smoke from aging the wine in French Oak barrels. We feel this wine offers more concentration
