The Wellhead Brewpub

The idea for The Wellhead Restaurant and Brewpub first formed in the late 1990’s when owner Frank Yates’ brother, Mike Stegall who later became the Wellhead’s first brewmaster, began experimenting with making beer in his garage using a “little brew system” purchased for Stegall by his wife. Stegall served as brewmaster of the newly formed brewpub from 2000 to 2003, but moved on to other endeavors in order to afford college expenses for his children. Yates credits Stegall with the idea to open the brewpub, and is grateful for Stegall’s hard work in helping to get the business going.
The Wellhead is located at 332 W. Main, on the corner of Main and Third streets, in an older historic building which took a couple of years to redesign and remodel to meet the needs of the brewpub and restaurant. The property caught the attention of Yates because of its proximity to the first phase of “Artesia Main Street (downtown renovation),” a project which was set into motion and largely headed and completed by Artesia MainStreet, a non-profit organization which works to revitalize the downtown area of Artesia through renovation and rehabilitation of buildings, landscape and infrastructure. Yates has been a large supporter and financial contributor to the organization since it formed in 1997 under the direction of his second cousin, Peyton Yates.
