Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards

Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards A landmark winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains, SavannahChanelle Vineyards is nestled in the Redwoods along the historic "Chaine d'Or" (Golden Chain). French immigrant Pierre Pourroy first established the vineyards in 1892. A gravity-flow winery was added to the site in 1917. Today the Ballard family carries on this turn-of-the-century legacy. Michael and Kellie Ballard purchased the property in 1996, naming it after their two daughters. The estate vine-yard sits on 58 acres, with 15 acres cultivated to five award-winning varietals: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Carignane, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay. The Zinfandel plantings date to 1910, and the Cabernet Franc plantings-California's oldest--date to 1920. But when all is said and done, the winery's raison d'être is Pinot Noir. Michael Ballard and Winemaker Tony Craig have joined forces to turn Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards into a Pinot Noir house second to none. "We are obsessed by Pinot Noir," Michael Ballard asserts. "We have launched a program to create the finest examples of California Pinot Noir by drawing grapes from the best Pinot-growing areas in the state-among them, the Sonoma Coast and the Santa Lucia Highlands. We have also planted a new Pinot Noir vineyard just above our tasting room." Today over 80 percent of the winery's total production is dedicated to Pinot Noir. Craig continues to produce Savannah-Chanelle's small lot estate wines as well. These limited releases for example, 450 cases a year of old vine Zinfandel and 350 cases a year of old vine Cabernet Franc are very special wines indeed. Michael Ballard notes, "If you see a Savannah-Chanelle wine that is not a Pinot Noir, you should really try it; there is a good reason why we made that particular wine." Located just over three miles from the village of Saratoga, Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards is close to Silicon Valley but worlds away from the everyday business environment. The 1912 Redwood Tasting Room and Mediterranean-style chateau present visitors with spectacular mountain views to enjoy with the wines. The Tasting Room boasts a children's library and gift and wine accessories (including wine charms made especially for Savannah-Chanelle in sets of eight, perfect for guests to identify their glasses). An extensive book selection ranges from cookbooks to essays on wine, and a grand piano provides weekend entertainment. Visitors are invited to picnic by the stream, in the redwoods, or on the hill.
