Viento Wines

Viento Wines Viento wines are created by Rich Cushman, winemaker for over 25 years and native of Hood River, Oregon. We chose the name Viento, Spanish for "wind," to reflect the constant vibrancy of the wind in the Columbia River Gorge. Our family works together to make these limited production wines in Hood River. We carefully craft all of our wines to emphasize balance, fruit character and the vineyard. At Viento, we practice the art of winemaking with respect for traditions and my personal style.

  Cuvée Déjà vu
Great for creating your own special occasion. A very traditional champagne method sparkling wine made of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. The extended aging of over 12 years on the yeast gives this special bottling wonderfully rich and lingering flavors and bubbles. Available in magnums only.
  Cuvée Provençal
This Grenache (80%)/ Syrah (20%) blend is inspired by the wines of Chateauneuf du Pape. The wine was made by cofermenting the two varietals (100% from Alder Ridge Vineyard) then barrel aging for sixteen months. The bouquet is of strawberries, blueberries, lavender, pepper and warm summer earth. The rich, warm, full-bodied palate offers lively strawberry flavors with notes of spices, coffee, plums and earth.
  Gewürztraminer
This Gewürztraminer (literally “spicy traminer”) was grown in the stunning Celilo Vineyard, high above the Columbia River in the heart of the Gorge. The wine was made by whole cluster pressing very ripe fruit and then fermenting to total dryness in old French oak barrels, without any malolactic. Aromas of carnations, citrus, pear, mango and spices. are followed by full-bodied and dry floral/ citrus/ spice /mineral flavors.
Nocturne - Muscat Canelli Dessert Wine, Columbia Valley
Here we go with another inspiration wine. This one is drawn from the fabulous Rutherglen sweet muscats of Australia. We started with very ripe (29.8 brix) Muscat from the fabulous Champoux vineyard and then barrel fermented this for a short while before fortifying with grape spirits. Then came FIVE YEARS of barrel aging at ambient temperature (from 35F in winter to 85F in summer) which helped develop an incredible bouquet reminiscent of cream soda, vanilla, orange rind, honey and lovely spices. The flavors are deeply sweet and rich with ripe, floral/ spicy tones and an incredibly long finish. This is a wine to reflect with and savor. We have been patient – trying not to do too much barrel tasting as we watched the wine develop over five years of barrel aging. It is now your turn to reward yourself with our patience. Finished wine is 19.8% alcohol and 14.2% residual sugar.
Pinot Noir - Cuvée R, Willamette Valley
Our only Pinot ever produced - from a fabulous vintage. Cherry scents plus the classic elegance and style of this wonderful grape come clearly through in this wine. Three top tier vineyards in the Willamette Valley are behind this attractively oaked beauty.
  Riesling - Columbia Gorge Vineyard
Straight out of the Old World - crisp apple and flint aromas and off dry flavors could be from a vineyard overlooking the Rhine - but with this wine the vineyard (planted in 1981) is beside the Columbia. A wonderfully versatile wine with many foods.
  Sangiovese - Cuvée Tuition
A blend of this Italian varietal grown in two great vineyards - Pepper Bridge (81%) and Alder Ridge (19%). Classic dusty cherry aromas and deep spicy flavors mark this dry and delicious wine. No new oak. About the name college expenses begin this Fall.
  Sangiovese Rosé
A taste of Spring! A serious, dry rosé produced from young vines grown at a beautiful site. We cold-soaked crushed fruit for 4 days then followed by fermentation in old oak barrels. Bright strawberry–cherry aromas and deep fresh flavors. Enjoy with meals fresh from the garden.
  Syrah - Lonesome Spring Ranch,
This elegant interpretation of Syrah from Lonesome Spring Ranch shows the effects of cofermentation with a small amount (3%) of Viognier. The bouquet is complex with blueberries, white pepper and pomegranate and al elegant and deep – almost Pinot noir like- flavor profile. Will age beautifully!
  Syrah - Seven Hills Vineyard
What a fabulous vineyard Seven Hills is! For our second vintage from this site we have another incredible Syrah – jammy berries and light smoky oak highlight the nose while the flavors are deep and extremely long. Extremely limited – only four barrels produced. Gold Medal - Northwest Wine Summit Double Gold Medal – Winepress Northwest
  Syrah Cuvée R
"R" we Romantic or Ridiculous to be in this business? We know that my wife is Robin and I am Rich and the wine is Red - also Redolent of exotic spices and Ripe fruit, Robust and delicious. This Cuvee (or blend) of Syrah is from five highly Regarded vineyards in the Columbia Valley.
  Viognier - Lonesome Spring Ranch
