Ed Ullman at Rushland Ridge Vineyard and Winery in Rushland believes wine is grown, not made. He and his family run the four-acre vineyard, which produces about 20 different wines — something for everyone. Ullman eschews marketing, flashy events and entertainment. Instead, he concentrates on producing quality, drinkable wines at an affordable $6 per bottle. He’s not just interested in the wine as a product, but focuses on “making the wine from the vine to the bottle.” “This is a long-term project that we’re never going to finish,” said Ullman. Over the years, hopefully, someday something will evolve out of this.” Ullman got his start in the late 60s. He planted his first vines in Huntingdon Valley with his father, and in their 125-year-old wine cellar, they began to develop their winemaking skills. Ullman and his wife, Lisa, purchased 22 acres atop Rushland Ridge in 1986. The winery opened in 1991, and the vineyard now includes such Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. With production under 2,000 gallons per year, he and his family have no trouble selling everything he makes in the tasting room on weekends. Future plans include expanding the vineyard to 15 acres. Hours: Open March thru December: Sat. 12-6; Sun. 12-4. Closed Jan. & Feb.
