Keenan Winery

Keenan Winery High in the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1,700 feet above the Napa Valley floor, are Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery and vineyards. This area was first identified as prime vineyard land by Peter Conradi in the late 19th century when he planted 100 acres of terraced vineyard in Zinfandel and Syrah grapes. The Conradi Winery operated until Prohibition when the vineyards and winery fell out of use. In 1974, Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the defunct Conradi Winery site. No vines remained. Only the crumbling walls of the former winery and a few old broken tanks told of its history, but Robert was certain the mountain top vineyards would be perfect for an estate winery. He replaced tree stumps and rocks with rows of Cabernet and Chardonnay, hired an engineer to redesign the original winery structure, and brought in a contractor to begin construction. The winery was made operational just in time for the harvest of 1977. From that time on, Keenan has earned a great reputation for producing wines of intense character and renowned acclaim. Keenan focuses on three varietals -- Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. It produces nearly 10,000 cases per year. Combining the dedication of experienced winemakers with a commitment to excellence, the Robert Keenan Winery has distinguished itself as a maker of exceptional wines -- in limited varietals and quantity. Wines for sipping, wines for enjoying, wines for enhancing any occasion.

Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District Reserve
The finished wine is an immense, full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy this wine with a rich meal, or allow it to slowly evolve over the next twenty years.
  Merlot Napa Valley
The 2002 Keenan Merlot is composed of seventy percent Keenan Estate Merlot. The remainder of this wine is made up of Merlot fruit harvested from the Napa Carneros region. In addition, three percent Estate Cabernet Franc has been added to the blend in order to add additional complexity. After hand harvesting, the grapes were de-stemmed and inoculated with Montrachet yeast. Fermentation ranged from seven to twelve days before pressing. The'02 Merlot has been aged in thirty-three percent new French and American oak barrels for nineteen months. The resulting wine shows ripe plum, blackberry, cocoa and spice aromas that are enhanced by a toasty oak background. Consumers can expect this Merlot to open up to a rich, velvety, full-bodied wine.
  Merlot Napa Valley, 25th Anniversary
The'01 Merlot has been aged in fifty percent new French and American oak barrels for twenty months. The wine remains one hundred percent Merlot -- no other varietals were added to the blend. The resulting wine showsripe plum, blackberry, cocoa and spice aromas that are enhanced by a toasty oak background. Consumers can expect this Merlot to open up to a rich, velvety, full-bodied wine.
  Merlot Napa Valley, Carneros
The 2001 Carneros Merlot shows raspberry and ripe plum aromas, yet coffee and cinnamon nuances become more pronounced as the wine opens up. Mouth-filling flavors and well-balanced structure allow it to show wonderfully with a variety of well seasoned dishes
  MERLOT RESERVE Spring Mountain District
The 2000 Merlot Reserve is a bold, full-bodied wine. Ripe black cherry and roast coffee bean show gracefully in the nose and hints of toasty oak are exhibited on the finish. Soft and round, this wine is delicious right now, but has the structure to age for many years to come.
  MERNET RESERVE Napa Valley
2001 marks the first vintage in which the proprietary red blend, Mernet, is composed primarily of fruit grown on Keenan's Spring Mountain District Estate. This is also the first time that Cabernet Franc is a component in the blend; previous vintages were composed exclusively of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
  Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The blend was assembled just before bottling. The portion of Cabernet harvested from the Pope Valley region of Napa has added plenty of forward fruit while a vineyard in the Oak Knoll District supplies complex, earthy characters. Keenan’s estate Cabernet Sauvignon makes up almost 50 percent of this wine. Keenan's Estate grown Cabernet imparts amazing concentration and remarkable structure.
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 25th Anniversary
The growing season provided Keenan Winery with yet another stellar vintage. The Cabernet grapes were harvested at the peak of maturity, and ripe fruit flavors and aromas dominate this wine. After harvest the fruit was crushed, then fermented for seven to ten days. The wine was barrel aged in fifty-percent new French and American oak for twenty months.
  Napa Valley Chardonnay
The finished wine shows citrus, ripe pear and green apple in the nose. Hints of lush white peach are noticed as the wine opens up. The sur-lie aging has added richness and complexity, and plenty of oak character returns on the finish. Like all of Keenanís wines, this Chardonnay is a food worthy wine whose crisp acidity and medium body will accompany a wide variety of food fare.
  Napa Valley Merlot, Carneros
The 2002 Carneros Merlot shows raspberry and ripe plum aromas, yet coffee and cinnamon nuances become more pronounced as the wine opens up. Mouth-filling flavors and well-balanced structure allow it to show wonderfully with a variety of well seasoned dishes.
  Zinfandel Napa Valley
The finished wine shows concentrated black cherry and raspberry fruit in the nose, and hints of black pepper and vanilla add complexity. This is a rich, full-bodied Zinfandel that will accompany a wide array of foods, but we suggest anything barbecued - smoky barbecued flavor is a great match for this wine.
