Leeward Winery

Leeward Winery was founded by Chuck Brigham and Chuck Gardner in 1979. In 1982, the winery moved into its current facility in Ventura, taking great care to design a winery that facilitates proper wine production and aging procedures. One unique feature is a temperature controlled barrel fermentation room ideally suited to Chardonnay production. The barrel fermentation and aging of wine take place in French Oak. The production techniques, when combined with the highest quality grapes available, create Leeward's own distinct style.
Although the facility could easily house a greater volume of wine, Leeward intends to limit growth in order to maintain the strictest standards of excellence. This dedication to quality guides the decisions in purchasing some of the finest state of the art equipment found in any winery its size.
Specializing in a handful of varietals and in limited quantities enables Leeward to concentrate on making these wines well. More than half of Leeward's production is comprised of rich, full-bodied Chardonnays from premier vineyards along the Central Coast. They also produce Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the Napa Valley, Syrah from the Edna Valley, Pinot Gris from the Central Coast, and since 1989, Leeward has also produced premium Pinot Noir from the renowned Bien Nacido Vineyard. By matching the soil and climate to a specific grape varietal, some of the best vineyards in California are selected to produce distinct, hand crafted wines.
Each vineyard reflects its potential of producing a particular varietal grape of superior quality. All grapes are purchased under strict contracts to ensure the winery's necessary quality standards while maintaining our commitment to excellence recognized by the consumer.
