Seavey Vineyard
|
|
In 1989, William and Mary Seavey renovated--as a winery--a historic stone barn built a century earlier. A year later, Seavey Vineyard produced their first wines, the 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. A decade hence, after wine production and demand had outgrown the capacity of the original stone barn, additional adjoining winemaking facilities were constructed and an underground barrel aging chai was cut into the hillside. The expanded winery can produce 4,000 to 5,000 cases a year, a number that corresponds to the potential of the 40-acre vineyard. In 2003 we installed one of the first solar energy systems used by a Napa Valley winery. The project eliminates 24,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually by using sunlight to power the cooling system, pumps, machinery, lights and computers of the winery operation at Seavey Vineyard.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

|
Caravina Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2002 Caravina Cabernet is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. The grapes came from our vines planted in several different locations of the south-facing hillside vineyard. Produced using traditional Bordeaux methods, the wine was aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, utilizing a combination of new and used to enhance stylistic fruit characteristics.

Caravina Cabernet Sauvignon
Seavey Vineyard's second estate-produced Caravina, the 2000, was made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that came from vines planted on several different locations of the south-facing hillside vineyard, and was harvested during the first three weeks in October. The 2000 Caravina is elegant, refined and delicious, with lots of sweetness and plump fruit. This full-bodied Cabernet should age well for 10 or more years.

Seavey Cabernet Sauvignon
The long anticipated 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon from Seavey Vineyard is a blend of 95% Cabernet and 5% Petit Verdot. The 2001 is powerful, large scaled and rich with intense black currant, blackberries and licorice flavors, and a long life ahead of it. The grapes were harvested during the first three weeks of October from vines planted on several different locations of the generally South facing Seavey hillside vineyard. Winemaking style followed classic Bordeaux methods. Harvested at 25 degrees brix, the juice remained in contact with the skins for 28 days. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in 48% new French oak barrels.

Seavey Cabernet Sauvignon
Seavey Vineyard’s tenth estate produced Cabernet, the 1999, is a blend of Cabernet (88%) Petit Verdot (9%), and Merlot (3%) grapes that came from vines planted on several different locations of the South-facing hillside vineyard, and was harvested during the first three weeks in October. The 1999 has an opaque ruby/purple color, a highly extracted bouquet of ripe black berry fruits, bitter chocolate, coffee and plum aromas; dense, layered and full bodied with exceptional concentration, the wine’s silky yet powerful tannins should allow it to age well for 20 years.

Seavey Chardonnay
Our first release of Chardonnay was 1990. Eleven years later, we are as proud as ever of our classic Burgundian Meursault style. The wine is elegant and yet full-bodied on the palate. The color is full of bright sunshine and golden straw.
Hand picked in the beginning of September, 2.28 tons were brought into the cellar in small "champagne" baskets. The vines rest adjacent to Conn Creek in a cooler zone to allow for even ripening.
The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and fermented in Burgundian barrels (25% new oak), with indigenous yeasts without malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged "sur lies" in the same barrels before bottling in May of 2002.
As with our previous vintages of Seavey Chardonnay, in its youth the wine displays a crisp fresh fruit character that meanders into soft ripe fruity elegance with age.

Seavey Chardonnay
The 2002 Chardonnay has fresh, honeyed citrus and ripe pear/pineapple-scented aromas, well-integrated oak, freshness and a good balance of acidity with lots of extract and richness. Delicious now, it should drink well for three to four years.
|
Seavey Merlot
Seavey Vineyard's seventh estate-produced Merlot, the 2000, was made from 100% Merlot grapes grown primarily on a gradually sloping east-facing bloc near the top of the vineyard. The grapes were harvested in the third week of September at optimal ripeness of sugar and tannins and with concentrated fruit flavors.
|
Seavey Merlot
The 2001 Merlot offers fresh fruit and floral aromas of cherries, violets, truffles and spice. Integrated and structured with a “medium body”, it will continue to age well for years.
|
Seavey Merlot
The 2002 Merlot is medium bodied in a full ripe style. Its dense 100% Merlot aromas include cedar, nutmeg, clove, berry fruit, black cherries, chocolate and sweet coffee. Rich and full on the palate, the wine has a long finish with well-integrated tannins.
