Scott Paul Wines

Scott Paul Wines The craft of winemaking leads down two distinctly different roads these days, with winemakers ultimately being forced into making a choice between the two. One road leads them to the equipment suppliers, a source of any number of gadgets for manipulating or altering their wines. Myriad technological and chemical resources such as must concentrators, reverse osmosis machines, spinning cones, and sacks of enzymes, oak chips, and cultured yeasts allow them to bend the wines to their will (or perhaps beat them into submission.) I prefer to walk the other road. The road that leads you to respect what nature provided in the vineyard. The road that says the wine is better off when left to its own devices. The road that values letting Pinot Noir be the delicate, ethereal, complex and sensory delight that only Pinot Noir can be. The road that led me to work with Pinot Noir, rather than Zinfandel, Syrah, or Cabernet. Every bottle bearing my Scott Paul label contains true, authentic Oregon Pinot Noir. My wines are not manipulated. The aromas and flavors in the wines come only from the grapes, and the sun and the earth that grew them. My goal is maximum transparency of flavor. My quest is to produce Pinot Noir with flavors that are delineated and pure. We’ve all seen that ballplayers on steroids have bigger muscles and seem to hit more homeruns. Artificially pumped-up Pinot Noir is just wine on steroids –bigger and more muscular, it’s often an exaggerated caricature of Pinot Noir and ultimately provides a hollow drinking experience. I treasure wines of character and personality, whose quirks and flaws are part of their beauty. Pinot Noir can be the most emotionally thrilling of all wines, but it does not achieve these heights when adulterated or made to a formula. My wines will reflect their vintage and vineyards. In the wine world, there is an unparalleled grace and beauty that only Pinot Noir can attain. Pinot Noir’s unique perfumes, textures, and precise flavors can be achieved only when extreme care is taken to capture and preserve those qualities in every step from the vineyard to the bottle. My mission is to pay that extra attention, take the extra care, and to deliver in every bottle deliciously pure, authentic Pinot Noir.

  Audrey Pinot Noir
Seamless and seductive from the moment it hits the palate, this is silken-textured Pinot with sweet raspberries, sweet wild strawberries, and floral notes on the nose, and bursts of red and black fruits on the palate. The exquisite silk flows on and on through the refined, elegant, pure finish. Pure Pinot, pure Audrey. Drink now-2009+.
  Cuvée Martha Pirrie Pinot Noir
This has a lot in common with the 2002 bottling, with perhaps more elegance and more emphasis on red fruit flavors and aromas, and softer tannins. Bright, sweet cherries and raspberries, with excellent length and depth – truly amazing Pinot for the money. There is not a better hand-crafted Pinot Noir at this price anywhere (we humbly believe!) Drink now and over the next 3-5 years.
  La Paulée Pinot Noir
Great concentration, many layers of flavor here. Extremely elegant for the vintage, I love the texture and mouthfeel. Black raspberries, black cherries and crushed raspberries abound, velvet in the mouth and superior length. Lovely now, and should continue to improve in the bottle over the next 5-7 years.
  Three Barrels Pinot Noir
Dense and concentrated, but not heavy-handed or overblown. Black fruits and earth on the nose, with rich black cherries, and black raspberries on the palate, rich and luscious through the long, lingering finish. This is one to put down for a while - for maximum enjoyment drink 2007-2010, or decant for an hour to enjoy over the next year or two.
