Ehlers Estate
|
|
Ehlers Estate is rich in the history of Napa Valley. The Callejomano band of the Wappo people were the first inhabitants to enjoy the bounty of the Estate. They traded widely in obsidian, a black volcanic glass indigenous to the area and highly prized as a material for tool making. In the early part of the 19th century Mexican settlers led by General Mariano Vallejo established themselves in the area. Stewardship of the Estate then passed to an English physician named Edward Turner Bale, who had married Vallejo's niece, and was awarded a 17,000 acre land grant in 1841. Pioneer immigration into the Napa Valley was in full swing by 1848. Most of the newcomers were farmers who came to purchase and work the land. One such landowner was Reverend Theodore Lyman from Trinity Episcopal Church in San Francisco. He purchased the Estate from Florentine Kellogg, the metalworker whom Bale had hired to construct a grist mill (now known as the Bale Grist Mill, part of the California state park system). Kellogg, who had been paid in land by Bale, sold a portion to Lyman before leaving to pan for gold in the Sierra Nevada. Lyman, who saw the potential for wine production, was called to be bishop of North Carolina, and he passed the land on to his son, W.W. Lyman.

Our debut Zinfandel from the Korte Ranch is a classic. The fruit and extraction are very concentrated and intense while maintaining great balance. There are delightful aromatics including white pepper, black cherry, rhubarb, and dried sage. The mouth is filled with a blast of rich fruit led by zesty boysenberry, spice, and mineral-edged plum. The intricate finish is a blend of mixed wild berries, maple, and slightly creamy oak. Tannins are full-bodied, ripe and luscious bringing one back for more.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Our Cabernet Sauvignon is the workhorse of the Estate. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and reflects the variety of clone and rootstock combinations that we grow on our 39 acres. This 2003 vintage is a youthful, forward and complex Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has an attractive dark ruby color, with aromas of black cherry, cassis, anise and earthy notes. The luscious core of fruit is intense, elegant and finely balanced. Mixed berries, plum, mocha and spice burst on the mid-palate and mesh into the velvety flavors of cocoa, dark currant and maple that make up the finish.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The wine’s deep red and purple color gives way to aromas of black cherry, blackberries, cedar, dried herbs, leather and tobacco. This medium, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon has flavors of currant, licorice, earth and florest floor with a powerful, lingering tannic finish showing great structure and acidity. This estate fruit was hand sorted and gently crushed into tank to cold soak for 48 hours to extract fruit flavors and deep, rich color. Fermentation went for 14 days and the wine was left for extended masceration (grape skin contact) for an additional week. After a light pressing to preserve elegence, the wine went into 100% French oak barrels. The wine was racked every 6 months and then aged for 21 months in 60% new oak and lightly filtered just prior to bottling.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Rich and luscious from start to finish, with layers of blackberry, clove and sweet leather that lead the very complex aromatics. Hints of rosemary and chocolate follow shortly behind. The dense and concentrated mid- palate is filled with black cherry, cedar and ripe plum. The balanced acid structure delivers a finish that is harmonious, rich and smooth, with a lingering aftertaste of juicy cassis and creamy maple.

Napa Valley Merlot
Our Estate Merlot is one of the key components in our Cabernet Sauvignon blend. However, it's just too good to keep in a supporting role! The structure and texture of our Merlot will delight fans of big, California wines. The 2003 Merlot was fermented and extracted to bring out a weight, density and concentration not normally associated with Merlot. The nose is complex with black cherry, cola and brown sugar leading the way. The dense, mid-palate is laced with blackberries, cedar and mocha notes. The finish is long and generous, leaving hints of black tea, currant and plummy chocolate.
|
