Ethiopia’s rich tradition of crafting fermented beverages has been passed down through generations, with each household boasting its secret recipe, a reflection of diverse tribes and cultures. In Ethiopia, the ancient tradition of making TEJ, or honey wine/mead, dates back over 3000 years, tracing its origins to the time of the Queen of Sheba. Legend has it that the Queen brought Honey TEJ as a tribute to King Solomon during her historic visit, sparking a royal affair that led to the foundation of the legendary Solomonic dynasty. Though historically reserved for royalty, Honey TEJ has evolved into Ethiopia’s National drink. At Negus Winery in Alexandria, Virginia, we honor this legacy by crafting small-batch wines that encapsulate Ethiopia’s culture. Our flagship, ‘Mama’s Honey Wine,’ is offered in both Semi-sweet and Semi-Dry versions, alongside a delightful Red Blend, White Blend, and a refreshing ROSÉ under our ‘Melody Wines’ label. Join us in raising a glass to shared heritage and the royal spirit within us all!
