Topel Winery

Topel Winery Perched at 1400 feet on the east side of Duncan Peak, looking down into Hopland, in the most southeast corner of Mendocino County, our vineyards were first planted in 1989. First, Cabernet and then Merlot and Petit Verdot and then Syrah. Our vineyard is the only one on the mountain and our wines reflect the very special soil and unique climate we enjoy. Daytime temperatures on the mountain get as high as temperatures around Calistoga, but the afternoons cool off very quickly. Our vineyard is above the fog line, so it gets plenty of morning sun, but due to the east-facing exposure of the mountainside vineyard it gets 2 hours less of hot afternoon sun than do the vineyards on the valley floor. The vineyards experience an extraordinary daily degree range of about 50 degrees: from a high of 95 to 100 down to a low of 45 or 50 every day. This temperature variance is crucial to the final flavor profile of the wine, and the long hang-time of the grapes allows us to harvest typically at the end of October--more than 2 weeks later than most of Napa--so that we get fully mature grapes before losing any significant acidity.

We like this wine. It has aged beautifully and expresses a deeply extracted cabernet character and long finish. The 1998 relects the refinement in marrying the vineyards to the vinification we have been striving for during the last ten years. It is a joy to drink.
  Cabernet - Hidden Vineyard Reserve
Deep cherry/blackberry /anise flavors. Strong entry with a long finish. This wine continued the wonderful evolution of our cabernet to a smooth balanced uniquely flavored elegantly made wine.
  Cabernet Sauvignon - Hidden Vineyard
This wine is 92% Cabernet, 4% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot. All grapes are estate grown on our mountainside vineyards in Hopland, California. 2002 was a fairly long growing season with few periods of excessive heat. This allowed these grapes to ripen with deep, berry-like flavors and substantial acidity. The grapes were harvested at an average brix of 26.18, TA .68, pH 3.62, and after fermentation had an alcohol of 14.4%. The must was allowed to spontaneously ferment in one-ton lots. Each lot was punched down by hand 5 times a day for 18 days. The wine was pressed off into 75% new French oak (Taransaud and Remond COF medium toast). The wine was aged for 28 months with minimal intrusion. It was then bottled and is being held for another year, until its release in January 2006. The wine is highly concentrated, deeply-colored and finely balanced. This vintage, more than any before it, reflects the unique micro-climate and minerally soils of our mountainside vineyards. The wine can be drunk now, but also can be cellared for many years.
  Meritage
A wonderful blend of our favorite Bordeaux varietals. Each grape enhances the other in a beautiful wine symphony.
Pinot Noir - Anderson Valley Serendipity II Vineyard
Fantastic wine. This is an elegant pinot. Handcrafted from start to finish. Wonderful balance with deep delicious flavors and long silky finish. It reminds us of a langorous picnic lunch on a sunlit flower filled meadow.
  Pinot Noir - Serendipity Vineyard
These grapes come from our Pinot vineyard at 2200 feet (mountain top), above Boonville in Anderson Valley. The grapes were picked in early October at 25.7 brix, TA .65, pH 3.75. Alcohol is 14.3%. The clone is Pommard on 110R rootstock. The grapes were spontaneously fermented in small batches. The musts were hand punched down five times per day to obtain maximum extraction of color and flavor and to maintain fermentation temperatures under 28 degrees Centigrade. The wine was pressed off into 20% new French oak (Remond Burgundy MTL+) and 80% one-year old French oak. The wine was aged for 15 months before bottling. 460 cases were produced.
  Syrah Cuvee Donnis
A big full bodied wonderful Rhone. You can taste the sun and fruit. It’s luscious and has the balance and structure to age for many years. Layers of flavor reveal themselves through an exceptionally long finish.
  Syrah Cuvee Donnis
Delicious, full-bodied Syrah with intense Rhone flavors. A very worthy successor to the ’02.
