Soter Vineyards

Soter Vineyards Tony and Michelle Soter, proprietors of Soter Vineyards, have announced the release of the first wines from their vineyard in the Willamette Valley. The 1998 Soter, Beacon Hill, Pinot Noir and 1997, Beacon Hill, Brut Rose will be available to the winery's consumer mailing list and to fine restaurants and wine shops in selected markets across the country. In 1997 the Soter's found a 45-acre parcel in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The vineyard is located on the north fork of the Chehalem Valley, six miles east of the town of Yamhill and ten miles northwest of Dundee. Planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the vineyard totals 22 acres. Winery neighbors include Beaux Freres, Brick House and Willakenzie. Tony Soter has drawn upon 25 years of winegrowing experience in his careful farming of this vineyard that was originally planted in 1988. New plantings were added in 1998 and 1999. Cover crops have been planted to add enriching nutrients to the soils and to assist in erosion control. Recently the Soter’s were given an Oregon “L.I.V.E.” Farming Certificate, which acknowledges the sustainable farming practices that have been employed since the Soter’s purchase of the land. The vineyard management is entrusted to Joel Myers. Associate winemaker, James Cahill, operates the wine company. The vineyard has been named “Beacon Hill” in reference to the lighthouse-like structure that sits atop the hill. The wines are estate grown and hand-made. Production of the 1998 Pinot Noir is 500 cases and will eventually grow to about 1,500 cases. The Brut Rose will remain around 500-700 cases. These are wines made by and for wine lovers. Becoming stewards to this Oregon land is, in a sense, a return to early familial roots. Both Tony and Michelle spent much of their early lives in Oregon; Tony was born in Portland and spent his first ten years there. Michelle was raised in Portland and left when she was eighteen. With two young children, the Soter’s had a desire to own vineyards and create a land-based winery to pass on to the next generation. After 25 successful years as a highly-regarded and sought out winemaking consultant and as owner and winegrower of Etude Wines in Napa, Tony is enjoying running a small artisan estate winery with his family. The Soter’s primary residence is in the Napa Valley. Time is spent at Beacon Hill for intervals throughout the year to oversee the vineyard and winemaking at crucial times. Soter Vineyards is dedicated to the proposition that great wines can be created by working to bring out the best our land has to offer and doing so with the utmost respect for the environment.

  Beacon Hill Blanc des Blancs
With a likely release date in 2007-2008, the first bottling of this wine should be extraordinary, and extraordinarily limited. The long time this wine spends on its yeast will yield glorious bread and brioche aromas, in a perfectly fresh style. We likely will see an enhanced texture from this aging process. What starts life as a fairly flinty mineral and green apple aspect in the young wine grows broader on the palate; with time, it gains volume and richness, and the acidity becomes more enveloped in a weightier robe of flavors. Soter Vineyards Blanc Des Blancs is a pristine rendition of Chardonnay and the terroir of Beacon Hill that is only made in the grandest vintages. It is a wine for connoisseurs and their special occasions.
Soter Beacon Hill Brut Rosé, Yamhill County
2001 Brut Rosé is simply exquisite, a wine that is at once graceful but remarkably concentrated in the mouth. Comprised of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Noir, it exhibits notes of custard, ginger, raspberries, cranberries and honey, framed by Beacon Hill’s signature underbrush and baking spice elements.
Soter Beacon Hill Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District
The 2003 Beacon Hill Pinot Noir is in a riper, more overtly powerful style than the 2002. With Burgundian notes of dry leaves, underbrush, and game, it features bold black cherries, Oregon blackberries, that ever-present cranberry top-note, cedar oil (a hallmark of Beacon Hill), and a wraith of marzipan. A gentle caress of tannin on the back palate promises a very bright future in the cellar. 1400 cases produced.
Soter North Valley Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District
Our latest North Valley Pinot Noir offers a marvelously sweet and spicy nose of fresh morello cherries, black bing cherries, black fruit, cranberries, and wild strawberries. In the mouth the wine is succulent and fine, sauntering into a sappy, persistent finish. A superb value, better than many single-vineyard wines.
Soter North Valley Rosé, Yamhill-Carlton District
Our North Valley Rosé, a dry, lively blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, is gorgeous. It has a distinct savor of pink grapefruit flesh, married with passionfruit, red cherries, and white roses. Beautifully expressive and pure, this will be the darling of your summer dinner parties, not to mention many a sultry weeknight. So easy to drink, so satisfying.
Soter Vineyards Cabernet Franc "Little Creek" Napa Valley
The wine carries all of Cabernet Franc's signature plushness, a grape whose wines Rabelais once compared to taffeta. Billowing from the glass come savory, meaty aromas, plus coffee beans, new leather, hints of milk chocolate, and those inimitable cedary, spice-box scents that make Cabernet Franc so compelling. Black fruits, fascinatingly exotic floral aromas, and structure all come from the Malbec, which makes this blend like no other in the world. The wine is very expressive, with notes of blood oranges, cherries, and raspberries. The palate typically has a core of supple tannin that suggests in most vintages, the wine will improve for 8-12 years.
