Thirty Bench Winery

Thirty Bench Winery Located on the Niagara Peninsula near Thirty Mile Creek. This winery began as a partnership in the late 1970's to grow grapes. In 1980 it expanded to 39 acres. Under the direction of Tom Muckle and Deborah Paskas their first wine (an Icewine) was produced in 1992.

Very sweet and densely flavoured, rich and full, with hints of lychees, pears and apricots.
  1999 Dry Riesling (VQA)
Displays elegant aromatics and delicate citrus with typically distinctive apple on the nose. Bone dry with bracing acidity resulting in a tart finish (characteristic of a young wine), which will soften with maturity.
  1999 Riesling Icewine (VQA)

  2001 Benchmark Blend (VQA)
50% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. Two years in Oak. Oak, vanilla, black pepper and pomegranate on the nose. Green pepper on the palate with a long and buttery finish.Low Yield Vines. Barrel aged 24 months.
  2001 Reserve Chardonnay (Prydatkewycz Vineyard) (VQA)
18 months in French Oak. Full bodied. A pale straw colour with butter, vanilla and almond on the nose, and is creamy, smooth with butter and coconut on the palate.***SOLD OUT***
  2001 Riesling Icewine (VQA)
Sweet, rich and full with flavours of lychees, pears and apricots.
  2002 Benchmark Blend (VQA)
50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Two years in Oak. Black. Nose is floral, with soft eucalyptus, cooked berries, mint cashew. In the palate earth mixes with plum or raspberry. The wine is full, eith strong tannins and assertive acidity. Its presently aggressive character will be transformed into robust quality with time.
  2002 Benchmark Blend (VQA)
50% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. One year in Oak. Toffee, oak, and stewed tomatoes on the nose. Black cherry, black pepper, and smoky oak lingering on the palate. Young Vines.
  2002 Benchmark Cabernet Franc (VQA
One year in oak. Medium Body, Garnet Red In colour. Light green pepper and corn and both smoky and fruity on the nose. Strawberry and other berries on the palate. Young Vines. Barrel aged 12 months.
  2002 Benchmark Chardonnay (Prydatkewycz Vineyard)
12 months in French Oak. Full bodied. Soft spice with peach, apricot and sweet apple on the nose. Woody, butterscotch with coconut and a creamy finish.
  2002 Benchmark Chardonnay (Thirty Bench Vineyard)
12 months in French Oak. Sweet apple and butterscotch on the nose, vanilla, butterscotch on the palate and a creamy finish.
  2002 Benchmark Reserve Blend (VQA)
50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very Dark Red Colour. In the nose coffee, caramel and cinnamon are spread over a backcloth suggestive of oak. In the palate coffee, toffee, wood, and cooked berries predominate. The wine has a full body, with a smooth front, a disticnt middle and a long finish. Its tannins and acids are balanced, its structure complex and its character distinguished and racy.
  2002 Benchmark Reserve Cabernet Franc (VQA)
Black, with purple rays around the rim. Rich, thich texture. Impressions of dark coffee in the nose, with plum and molasses underneath. Strong, good quality tannins and balanced but distinct acids characterize the palate, which begins and ends with plum. THe wine is very full, with spicy texture up=front, and a long finish. Its varietal character is classic, and it promises a long, distinguished future.
  2002 Benchmark Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (VQA)
Intense Purple colour. Complex and fruity in the nose, with suggestions of black cherry, anise and a hint of eucalyptus. Classically structured in the palate, with intense raspberry up-front followed by a long finish. Full-bodied, with balanced tannins and acids. A strong varietal character begins to show.
  2002 Benchmark Reserve Pinot Noir (VQA)
Deep violet colour. Nose herbal, eith more spice and minerals than fruit with suggestions fo rich dark chocolate lingering throughout. Rich and dark chocolate also appears in the palate, which has a long, minty, spicy finish supported by ample and tight acids and tannins. A big Pinot Noir, deep, full and well balanced.
  2002 Cabernet Franc (American Oak)
This dark ruby wine has hints of cedar and herbal tones on the nose and a creamy cedar palate with a long and elegant finish.
  2002 Cabernet Franc (Canadian Oak)
This complex, full bodied wine has dill and sweet spice on the nose and a palate of jams oak & vanilla.
  2002 Cabernet Franc Atalick Vineyard (VQA)
One year in Oak. Medium dark red colour. Mint, hints of raspberry and chocolate in the nose. In the palate, raspberry predominates. A light, balanced and fruity wine with clean varietal character.
  2002 Estate Chardonnay (VQA)
8 months in French Oak. This complex, full bodied wine with dill and sweet spice on the nose and palate of jams, oak and vanilla.
  2002 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer 50%/ Pinot Gris 50%(VQA)
Medium straw colour with honey and tropical fruit characteristics in this crisp, fresh wine. Crop thinned to two tonnes per acre for intensity.
  2002 Mountainview Blush (VQA)
A blend of 95% Vidal & 5% Cabernet Franc. Coral rose pink in colour, maraschino cherry and mango - honey nose. Sour cherry palate with a hint of spice and a slight licorice finish. Ideal for summer sipping but also a great dinner wine complimenting lighter dishes.
  2003 Mountainview White (VQA)
This wine has a fresh nose with hints of mint and a palate of lemon, peach and apricot with a long tropical finish.
  2003 Riesling Canadian Oak (VQA)
Barrel aged in New Canadian Oak for 2 weeks. This straw-coloured wine has a nose of green apple and hints of lemon and a palate of peach, citrus and passion fruit.***SOLD OUT***
  2004 Very Early Harvest Riesling (VQA)
A pale straw coloured wine with fresh green apple and floral elements on both the nose and palate with a hint of lemon on the finish.
  Kokkineli
A red wine which originated is ancient Greece where amphorae were coated with pine tree resin to prevent leakage and spoilage and incidentally flavoured the wine. Thirty Bench's "slim" version of this wine is a blend of selected premium Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown in the Niagara Peninsula spiced with a light infusion of authentic Aleppo Pine tree resin from Greece.
  Retsina
A white wine which originated is ancient Greece where amphorae were coated with pine tree resin to prevent leakage and spoilage and incidentally flavoured the wine. Thirty Bench's "slim" version of this wine is a blend of Riesling and Chardonnay grown in the Niagara Peninsula spiced with a light infusion of authentic Aleppo Pine tree resin from Greece.
