Windward Vineyard

Windward Vineyard "Exclusively Pinot Noir" is the hallmark of Windward Vineyard. Owners/operators Marc Goldberg and Maggie D'Ambrosia specialize in 100 percent estate grown and produced Burgundian-style, handcrafted Pinot Noir. Named for the cool Pacific Ocean winds that breeze through the Templeton Gap in the Santa Lucia Mountain Chain, on the Westside of Paso Robles, Windward Vineyard Pinot Noir is testimony to the unique microclimate and terroir of the area. Windward Vineyard is a small family winery dedicated exclusively to the growth and production of estate bottled Burgundian-style Pinot Noir. Owners Marc and Maggie are convinced that the site's rocky limestone, sloping well-drained soil and microclimate of the west side of the Paso Robles appellation had all the elements required to produce exceptional Pinot Noir. Windward Vineyard produces only, on the average, 1400 cases per year. Given the small production Windward Pinot Noir is usually found at small quality restaurants and retail shops and does not enjoy wide distribution.

  1993 Monopole Pinot Noir
Our first vintage in 1993 produced 320 cases of an intense Burgundian-styled wine with cassis flavors and full Bing Cherry Fruit in the front of the palette that was balanced by aging for one year in French oak.
  1994 Monopole Pinot Noir
In 1994 the vintage was influenced by the Pommard clones that came into their own, adding a more perfumed floral characteristic with a spectacular "Peacock's tail" finish.
  1995 Monopole Pinot Noir
The '95 was bottled on Thanksgiving day and produced 1200 cases of this well balanced Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir. The maturing vineyard developed a classic wine with an intense forward berry flavor, playful silky texture, and a long magical finish.
  1996 Monopole Pinot Noir
The vines are maturing and the "gout de terrior" of the vineyard is expressed with intense varietal character. Beautifully ripe, concentrated red and black cherry flavors, balanced by smoke and white pepper underneath. Powerful, spicy palate with a silky mouthfeel, incredibly fine tannic structure. 1100 cases produced.
  1997 Monopole Pinot Noir
A banner vintage for Pinot Noir on the west side of the Appellation Paso Robles. We added 1/3 new French Oak barrels to our program which imparts a subtle spice and faint cinnamon characteristic to the well balanced wine. Intense aromas of cherry, wood, and spice evolve with air and lead to a lingering earthy finish. Case production: 1300 cases.
  1998 Monopole Pinot Noir
Our El Nino vintage was harvested 6 weeks later than usual and led to soft and seductive tannins in this classic Pinot Noir. Wild strawberry nose with a lush bing cherry mouth and a slow, progressive finish that displays a hint of smoke from the Francoise Freres French Cooperage. The tannin's velvet texture is soft and approachable but promises to keep for years to come. Only 700 cases produced.
  1999 Monopole Pinot Noir
This vintage is our most profound expression of Windward Vineyard's potential. It contains all four characteristics that we believe are the apogee of the pinot noir varietal transformed into wine. A profound wild strawberry nose, ripe bing cherry fruit in front of the wine, a hearty middle with a satin mouth and a complex lingering finish, all characterized by finesse and elegance. Production: 1400 cases.
  2000 Monopole Pinot Noir
Our millennium vintage continues to express the "gout de terroir" of this mature Westside vineyard with a strawberry and ripe bing cherry nose that follows through with a lush palate. Windward's characteristic peacock tail finish is layered with hints of lingering soft spice. 1350 cases were made.
  2001 Monopole Pinot Noir
The ideal growing season on the Westside of Paso Robles produced an outstanding wine that expresses the magnificent potential of this vineyard. This is a wine with elegance and grace with a regal wild strawberry nose and deep spice on the entrance of the ripe bing cherry fruit in the front of the wine. Cassis and blueberries complement the middle of the wine as it progresses to the classical “Peacock Tail” finish that has been a hallmark of the Windward Vineyard Pinot Noir.
  2002 Monopole Pinot Noir
“Premiere Decade”, marks 10th crush at Windward Vineyard. This wine gives forth a rush of strawberries in its bouquet and entices the palate to the introduction of intense bing cherry fruit that integrates well with the complex spicy background that characterizes this vintage. Now a mature vineyard, the ’02 makes a profound statement with the finesse, elegance and layered complexity that are long standing traits of is unique terroir. The wine finishes with great length that elongates the lush velvety center of this rich vintage suggesting a wide array of foods that would pair well with the soft seductive tannins. Production: 1600 cases.
2002 Pinot Noir Barrel Select Gold Label
6-pack wooden case. Windward celebrates it 10th vintage with a special bottling of 10 select barrels. These barrels were held separate, specifically chosen for the intense velvet carpet that seemed to underlie their Burgundian profile. Ripe berries are on the nose of this wine as it gives way to caramelized cherries laced with cassis that embrace the front of the palate. The velvet carpet leads to a finish that seems to go on forever and whispers the long cellar life that this wine intends to endure as it awaits the company of the next decade.
  Monopole Pinot Noir
The wine reflects a beautiful ruby hue with gemlike qualities. The wild strawberry nose is profound in this vintage as is the intense ripe red bing cherry fruit that follows and infuses the palate with the glorious complexity of this recent vintage. The lush velvety center of this wine maintains itself all the way to the typical Windward Vineyard Peacock Tail finish that has become a classic, characteristic gift of the dense mineralization of the terrior that supports these unique Pinot Noir clones. This wine can be paired with a variety of spicy foods today and it will slowly mature and develop it's signature layered complexity and earth tones for many, many years to come.
  Monopole Pinot Noir
This vintage displays a deep strawberry color with a beautiful tint of ruby. The wild strawberry bouquet overwhelms the senses with promise of bing cherry and fruit complexities sure to follow in the body of this wine. Concentrated red bing cherry is the first sensation your palate receives, concluded with hints of raspberry and strawberry, wrapped up in a lush velvety middle that coats the palate. Slight hints of earth will develop over time, creating the beautiful balance of fruit and earth that we have come to expect from our Burgundian style Pinot Noir. The finish flows from the middle to the outskirts of the palate, which will later allow the layered complexities of fruit and spice to unfold as this wine matures.
