Stoney Mesa Winery
|
|
We started planting our vineyards in 1990, and released our first vintage in the fall of 1995. All of our wines are made from our own vineyard or from local growers in the area. Stoney Mesa Winery and its Vineyards are some of the highest in the world at an altitude of 5700 feet. You would think it would be impossible to grow grapes at this altitude. Our climate has been modified by Mother Nature, and is much milder than expected, as if we were thousands of feet lower. The suns rays are much more intense making the fruit here ripen before the frosts come, but the evenings are nice and cool, and that is very important for good acid retention. Our "Terror" is outstanding and local Geologists have compared it to Northern France. Located on the south face of the Grand Mesa, Stoney Mesa Winery, also known as Pfarmigan Vineyards, sits on the edge of a desert and on top of an ancient Ocean/Riverbed. Our soils reach depths of 12 to 15 feet deep and have excellent drainage. There is a 1-foot deep layer of calcareous soil at about 3 feet deep below a highly organic "green" layer of soil. Our average annual rainfall is 5 to 8 inches and 5 to 10 inches of snow putting us just above a desert climate. Our altitude protects us from severe winter freeze allowing the cold air to drop into the valley floor. Our southern exposure allows for a full day of sun.
