Secret Ravine Vineyards & Winery

During the famous “Gold Rush of ‘49”, adventurous prospectors searched for gold up and down a small, year round, creek that meanders through the Loomis Basin. Not more than 16 miles from Sutter’s Mill, the site of the 1849 discovery of gold, the creek was explored by prospectors and is presumed to be named Secret Ravine Creek because it is visually shielded by the hills and trees which constitute the beginnings of the Sierra Foothills. There is no record of extensive gold recovery from the Loomis Basin. As the gold ran out, the prospector’s turned to other trades as merchants and farmers. Asian workers from the railroad & quarries joined in to produce fruit and vegetable crops in the area. The topography, soil, and climate are perfect for wine grapes and immigrant explorers of European background soon established vineyards in the basin. So the secret is, those early settler’s planted and produced wine grapes in significant quantity, starting in the 1870’s. Prohibition which contributed to the subsequent demise of the wine grape industry, shifted production from grapes to fruit for shipment by rail to the markets in the east and west. The resurgence of wine grape growing in the Loomis Basin began in the late 1990’s and has grown steadily since then. As our name implies, the winery and vineyard are located near Secret Ravine Creek, in the Loomis Basin. A significant portion of the grapes used to produce our wine comes from land that was a vineyard from 1870 – 1954. During that period they grew Zinfandel, Tokay, Mataro (Mouvedre) and Mission grapes. Today we grow Zinfandel, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Barbera, and Sangiovese.

Take Horseshoe Bar Rd. exit off I-80, go east on Horseshoe Bar, turn right at first stop sign, turn right on to Brace Rd., left on Barton Rd and continue south 1/2 mile to Gold Trail Way and turn right. The blue roofed building on your left is our winery. (Indian Creek Country Club is across the road.)

2002 "Simply" Red Wine
This wine is a lusty union of 60% Merlot and 40% Zinfandel. Its youthful flavor flirts with black cherry, plum and cassis. The Merlot was aged in French Oak and the Zinfandel spent time in both French Oak and American Oak.

2002 Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine has a mingling of tannins, black cherry, cassis and herbs, a perfect companion with heavy beef, lamb, and Italian dishes.

2003 Sauvignon Blanc
This is a medium bodied, light gold colored wine with aromas and flavors of citrus, coconut, and spice. The grapes were picked at 23.5° Brix, fermented dry at 72° F and aged in experienced Oregon Oak for a smooth finish.

Estate Grown Sangiovese
This is a dark red wine with light oak aromas, moves slowly across the pallet, and leaves a long after-taste.

Gold Fever
This luscious blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier produced and bottled right here in the gold country provides lingering flavors of citrus, bananas and strawberry. Ideal with cheeses, and light summer meals.

Rattlesnake Red
This wine is 100% Sangiovese with hints of oak, leather and black pepper. Grown at a higher altitude and in different soil than the 2002 Estate Grown Sangiovese, these grapes produce a more classic Chianti style wine.

Syrah
Young, warm and seductive with flavors of tart black cherry, hints of pepper aged 24 months in French oak barrels. Compare the difference with the 2001 release.

Venom
Venom is from Sangiovese grapes grown on Rattlesnake Rd in Newcastle, CA. Left briefly on the skins before pressing produced a delicate Rosato (Rosé) with a semi-sweet taste and a bright festive red color. When chilled it can’t be beat served with salads, fish and white meats.

Zinfandel
Distinctly fruity with added aromas of oak and cinnamon, highlighted by its dark garnet color and smooth lingering after taste.
